Chapter 2 The terms of my captivity

_Emilia's POV_

Marco's words hung in the air, leaving me feeling stunned and confused. Insurance? What could he possibly mean?

"I don't understand," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

Marco leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers together. "Your father, Emilia, has something that belongs to me. Something of great value."

I felt a surge of fear. What could my father have possibly gotten himself into?

"What is it?" I asked, trying to keep my voice calm.

Marco smiled, his eyes glinting with amusement. "Oh, Emilia. You're going to have to wait and see. Let's just say that your father's... indebtedness to me is quite substantial."

I felt a chill run down my spine. My father was in trouble, and I was the pawn being used to ensure his cooperation.

"What do you want from me?" I asked, trying to keep my voice firm.

Marco leaned forward, his eyes locking onto mine. "I want you to stay here, with me, until your father pays his debt. You'll be my... guest, shall we say."

I felt a surge of anger and fear. I was being held captive, with no idea of when I'd be released.

"And if my father can't pay?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

Marco's smile grew wider. "Oh, Emilia. I'm sure he'll find a way. After all, he has something very precious to lose."

Me.

I swallowed hard, trying to process the situation. I was a hostage, a bargaining chip in Marco's game of power and revenge.

"How long will I have to stay here?" I asked, trying to keep my voice calm.

Marco shrugged. "That depends on your father. But I assure you, Emilia, you'll be treated well. You'll have everything you need, and more."

I raised an eyebrow, skeptical. "And what about my freedom?"

Marco's smile faltered for a moment, and I saw a glimmer of something else in his eyes. Something almost like... regret.

"Your freedom, Emilia, is a luxury you can't afford right now. But don't worry, I'll take good care of you. You'll be safe here."

Safe. I didn't feel safe. I felt trapped, captive, and completely at Marco's mercy.

I took a deep breath, trying to think clearly. I had to find a way out of this situation, to escape and get back to my normal life.

But as I looked into Marco's eyes, I felt a shiver run down my spine. I wasn't sure if I'd be

_Emilia's POV_

I followed Marco through the winding corridors of his estate, trying to take in everything at once. The walls were adorned with lavish artwork, and the floors were covered in plush carpets that silenced our footsteps.

We stopped in front of a door that looked like it belonged in a fairy tale. Marco produced a small key and unlocked the door, revealing a room that took my breath away.

The room was a masterpiece of luxury, with a four-poster bed draped in silk and velvet. The walls were painted a soft, creamy color, and the floor was covered in a thick, plush rug.

Marco gestured for me to enter, and I did, feeling like a princess in a gilded cage.

"This will be your room for the duration of your stay," Marco said, his eyes roving over the space. "You'll find everything you need here. Clothes, toiletries, books... anything you could possibly want."

I wandered over to the window, pulling back the curtain to reveal a stunning view of the gardens below. The sun was setting, casting a golden glow over the entire scene.

"It's beautiful," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Marco's eyes flicked to mine, and for a moment, I thought I saw something there. Something almost like... kindness.

"Yes, it is," he said, his voice low and smooth. "I'm glad you like it."

I turned back to the room, taking in the opulent decor. It was a prison, but it was a luxurious one.

"What about my family?" I asked, turning back to Marco. "Can I contact them? Let them know I'm okay?"

Marco's expression turned cold, his eyes glinting with a hard light.

"I'm afraid that's not possible," he said, his voice firm. "At least, not yet. But don't worry, Emilia. You'll be safe here. I promise you that."

I felt a shiver run down my spine as I met Marco's gaze. I wasn't sure if I believed him, but I had no choice but to trust him. For now, at least.

Marco turned to leave, but not before his eyes roved over me once more. I felt a flush rise to my cheeks, and I looked away, trying to hide my reaction.

As the door closed behind Marco, I was left alone in my gilded cage. I wandered over to the bed, running my hand over the soft, silky fabric.

It was a luxurious prison, but it was still a prison. And I was determined to escape.

able to outsmart him, or if I'd even want to.
