Chapter 1
At the dinner table, in front of more than twenty relatives, my mother-in-law shoved a document right into my face.
"Just sign it," she said smoothly. "Think of it as doing your mother a favor."
I looked down at the heading. It was a home equity loan agreement for one million dollars.
Across from me, my brother-in-law gave me a smug grin. Beside him, Aunt Clara chimed in, "Harper, what are you waiting for? Just sign it already."
I told them I needed to go home and discuss it with Caleb first.
My mother-in-law's face instantly darkened. "It's your own household. Can't you even make a simple decision yourself?"
I refused to sign that night.
Later, she sent a three-minute voice note to the entire family group chat. She called me selfish, ungrateful, and a heartless snake.
Out of more than seventy replies, not a single person stood up for me.
A month later, when I got home from work, three men were waiting outside my front door to seize the house.
I pulled up the county land registry records on my phone. The status was stamped in red: Mortgaged, $1,000,000.

At the celebration for my brother-in-law's newborn son, my mother-in-law hosted twenty tables of guests at the family estate.
By two in the afternoon, most of the guests had cleared out. She insisted that we stay for dinner.
I thought it was just a casual family meal.
Then she walked out of the back room holding a thick manila envelope.
"Harper, come here," she called out.
She handed the envelope to me.
I pulled out the contents and saw a dense, multi-page legal contract.
"Travis needs some cash flow for his business," she said casually. "I found a private lender through a friend. Just sign your name on this."
I flipped to the first page. The title was bolded: Real Estate Mortgage and Loan Agreement.
Under the collateral section, my home address was clearly typed out.
The loan amount was listed as one million dollars.
"Evelyn, this is for a million dollars," I said, looking up in shock.
"I know," she replied, nodding without missing a beat. "Travis has inventory tied up. If he doesn't get this cash flow right now, his deal is going to fall apart. Just sign it and get the paperwork out of the way."
"But this is my house…"
"What does it being your house have to do with anything?" She frowned deeply. "You married into our family, so that house belongs to our family now. Besides, isn't that house going to your kids eventually anyway? What's wrong with me borrowing the equity for a little while?"
The entire dining table went dead silent.
I could feel more than twenty pairs of eyes drilling into me.
Aunt Clara set down her fork. "Harper, your mother-in-law asked you for a simple favor. Are you really going to refuse her?"
Aunt Brenda chimed in immediately. "Exactly. Travis is your brother-in-law. When his business takes off, you two will benefit, too."
Travis sat across from me with his legs crossed, a cocky smirk plastered across his face.
His wife, Megan, sat beside him peeling an orange, not even bothering to look up.
I gripped the contract tightly, a knot tightening in my stomach.
"Evelyn, this is too serious. I have to discuss this with Caleb first…"
"Discuss what?" Her voice spiked. "He's sitting right here! What is there to discuss?"
I turned to look at Caleb.
He kept his head down, staring at his plate without saying a word.
"Evelyn, my parents paid the down payment on that house…"
"So what if they did? Your name is on the deed, not theirs." She pushed a pen straight toward my hand. "Sign it. Stop stalling. Everyone is waiting to eat."
"I…"
"You what?" Aunt Clara's expression turned sour. "Your mother-in-law just wants to borrow something of yours, and you're making all these excuses. What's your problem? Do you look down on our family?"
"Aunt Clara, that's not what I meant…"
"Then what do you mean?" Aunt Brenda cut in. "Has Travis ever asked you for a single dime before? She asks for one little favor and you make a massive scene. What are you playing at?"
I opened my mouth, completely at a loss for words.
The air in the room felt thick enough to suffocate me.
"Forget it."
My mother-in-law snatched the contract right out of my hands.
She glared at me, her eyes freezing over.
"Harper, I see who you really are now."
She turned to the rest of the table. "You all saw it. I asked her for one simple favor, and she flat-out refused me."
"Evelyn, that's really not…"
"Save your breath," she snapped, waving a hand dismissively. "Let's just eat."
I couldn't remember a single bite of food from that dinner.
All I remembered were the cold, judging glares from everyone around me, treating me like a criminal.
Around nine that evening, Caleb and I drove back toward the city.
Neither of us said a word for miles.
As we neared our neighborhood, I couldn't hold back anymore. "Why didn't you speak up for me today?"
"That's my mother," he said, his voice heavy with exhaustion. "What was I supposed to say?"
"She wanted me to put up my house for a million-dollar loan. Do you honestly think that was reasonable?"
"No, it wasn't," he admitted. "But you rejected her in front of the entire family. How was she supposed to save face?"
"So what was I supposed to do? Just sign my life away?"
He fell silent.
"Caleb, the down payment was six hundred thousand dollars. My parents sold their own home just to scrape that together for me. They're renting an apartment right now."
"I know…"
"You know? Then why did you just sit there with your mouth shut?"
He gave no answer.
That night, we went to sleep wrapped in a suffocating wall of silence.
When I unlocked my phone the next morning, the family group chat had already exploded.
