Chapter 3
3
Once we got into the car, he started talking about tomorrow's plans. "I have your birthday surprise ready. Once this busy period is over, let's plan for a baby, alright?"
I just listened quietly, staring out the window without giving him a response.
As soon as the car started, his phone began to ring.
He answered it, his brows furrowing slightly as he looked incredibly torn.
I turned to look at him, my voice completely calm. "If you have somewhere to be, just go."
He hesitated. "Jane, I..."
"It's fine. I'll go to the yacht and wait for you."
I didn't see the caller ID, but I knew there was only one person in the world who could make him look like that.
After boarding the yacht alone, I took out my phone and checked Grace's social media.
A freshly posted photo popped up with the caption: "Someone is always here to support me, bringing me late-night snacks and chatting with me. Thank you for always taking care of me."
The comments were full of praise. "Your husband treats you so well!" "This is the ultimate standard for spoiling a wife!"
However, my eyes were entirely drawn to a hand visible in the corner of the photo.
Around the wrist was a very familiar antique wooden rosary―it belonged to Kieran.
I dialed his number, but Grace was the one who answered the call.
"It's so late, why is my dear sister calling? You aren't looking for Kieran, are you?" Her voice was thick with mockery.
"Give it up, he's not going back tonight. You just can't keep a man hooked, sister. I basically handed him to you, and you still couldn't hold onto him."
I hung up the phone coldly, turned around, and looked at the yacht's crew. "Start the boat."
"Are we not waiting for the other guest?"
I replied softly, "No need to wait. It's just me."
The yacht slowly started, breaking through the dark waters as it headed out into the deep sea.
I stood alone on the deck, looking up at the starry sky as the freezing sea breeze hit me, the starlight reflecting off the rippling waves.
For the entire night, he never showed up.
I leaned against the railing, staring blankly at the water as fragments of the past five years flooded my mind.
His gentleness, his company, his promises... Every memory flashed by like broken shards, only to piece together a completely shattered picture.
All the illusions and hypocrisy felt so ridiculous and ironic now.
Just before sunrise, I dialed his number one last time.
This time, the phone was turned off.
Staring at the screen, I scheduled an automatic upload for the phone recording and the video evidence of me painting that masterpiece.
After doing all this, I walked to the back of the boat and took one last look at the faint morning light on the horizon.
Then, I leaped forward, plunging straight into the freezing ocean.
On the other side of town, Kieran was hurriedly leaving Grace's place, speaking as he walked. "I have to go. It's her birthday today, and I promised to watch the sunrise with her."
Grace tried to stop him, looking displeased. "Kieran, I need you right now too..."
Kieran shook his head. "No, not today."
Just then, his assistant ran up to him, out of breath.
"Mr. Grant, your wife jumped into the sea!"
