Chapter 3
3.
On the way back, the black Maybach glided through the lights of Manhattan.
I quietly sent a message to Harper.
【Deal. I'm coming.】
Then, I booked a flight to Charles de Gaulle for the early morning.
When Julian came out of the bathroom, I was in the walk-in closet, organizing the jewelry he had given me over the years.
Most of it was bought by his assistant on Fifth Avenue for every holiday―Valentine's Day, Christmas, even my birthday.
But I had to admit, Mr. Sterling's taste and budget were always on point. This stuff was worth a lot.
Combined with the savings I'd accumulated from my investments under his guidance, it was more than enough for Harper and me to live a life of luxury in Europe.
The thought made me smile.
Julian's deep, husky voice, still damp from his shower, suddenly sounded from above me.
"What are you smiling about?"
I jumped, quickly closing the jewelry box, and stammered out a lie.
"Just thinking about all the jewelry you've bought me. I love every piece. Seeing them reminds me of you."
Please. After three years as a kept woman, I was an expert at saying what my benefactor wanted to hear.
A flicker of pleasure crossed Julian's eyes. He wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me close.
"There's a charity jewelry auction in the Hamptons next month. I'll take you."
I nodded, obediently resting my head against his chest.
Inside, my heart ached―an auction in the Hamptons? There would be so many exquisite pieces.
Too bad I wouldn't be around for it.
According to the rumors, he was set to officially announce his engagement to Victoria next month.
I might be his mistress, but I had my principles. I don't touch men who are taken, and I don't stay with men who don't respect me.
That's why, when Harper first introduced us, I had carefully chosen Julian.
Good body, great in bed, a Wall Street titan. Lots of money, very little drama.
…
Thinking about how well Julian had treated me these past three years, never skimping on material things.
This was our last night. I figured I'd give him a five-star review.
I wrapped my arms around his neck, stood on my toes, and initiated a kiss on his cool lips.
Julian's eyes darkened as he cupped the back of my head, taking control.
That night, I was incredibly passionate, as if trying to use up decades' worth of fervor all at once.
Julian was equally energetic. A long time later, he leaned over and whispered in my ear, his voice tender in a way that felt foreign.
"Why are you so wild tonight? Like a little feral cat."
I curled up under the silk sheets and secretly checked my phone―three hours until I had to leave for the airport.
I turned and snuggled into his arms, hiding the slyness in my eyes.
"No reason. I'm tired. Let's sleep."
That's everything available right now.
