Chapter 2 The Brother

Laya

As time goes on, we find ourselves back to back fighting off demons left and right. There seemed to be no end to them and even though I know we could do this all day, our men were growing weary. I look back at Tess as she breaks a demons neck. "I think we're going to need some back up." She raises an eyebrow at me as she reverse kicks another demon away from us. "Laya I don't think that's a good idea. He can get a little...over excited sometimes." I dodge an attack and slice the demons head off with my blade before flipping my hair out of my face. "Yes I know but this is taking far too long. Besides, the men are dropping like flies around us." She looks around at all of the wounded that are still trying to fight. She sighs and waves her hand approving and a smile forms across my face. Tess steps in front of me for protection as I close my eyes taking in a deep breath. I use my energy to connect with my brother and smile when he instantly gets the link. Darren. I need you. "In trouble I presume?" I smirk opening my eyes to see him standing before me with a smile on his face. He wearing a black t shirt with jeans, combat boots, and a large black trench coat. By the blood stains on his face and how messing his curly brown hair looks, I can only assume he was out hunting before I called for him. Before you get any ideas, he's not a cold blooded killer. He only hunts men that hurt women, similar to me and Tess. None of us really need the blood to survive since we have adapted, but every now and then we have to fulfill our thirst. What better way than to sink our teeth into a rapist or murderer? It's a win win in my opinion "Just a little."I say rolling my eyes. He laughs patting me on the head. " Aww don't worry, big brothers got you covered." He tenses a little and grabs a demon by the throat as it breaks past Tess and tries to attack me. Darren's eyes glow red as her slowly turns to face the demon who looks as if he's seen a ghost. "Uh uh uh. That's MY little sister there bucko. Big mistake." Darren smashes the demon into the ground and stomps on its face. I raise an eyebrow at him when he's done. "A bit excessive don't you think?" He shrugs and cracks his neck before giving me a crooked smile. "Just having a little fun." I shake my head at him and we get into action, fighting alongside Tess and the rest of our men. With my brother at my side, we work in unison tearing through the demons as if they aren't even there. Within the next hour, the only ones left standing are me, my brother, tess, and a few hundred of our men. Tess sighs a breath of relief as she raises her fist high in the air signaling our victory. The men erupt into cheers and i can't help but smile at their joy. I go off to check on the wounded when all of a sudden I begin to feel dizzy. I fall to my knees as my body begins to sweat profusely. "Wh-what's happening?" I look down at my leg and see the smallest cut. I watched as the poison seemed to seep into my veins before my bison became blurry. Tess. I turn and reach out for her as I see her turn to me. The joy quickly falls from her face as she starts to run towards me. A slight smile forms on my lips as I feel myself losing consciousness. I know she will save me. She always does. Right before things go black, I hear tess scream as Darren stabs her in the shoulder with his blade. They both fight for control and I watch as tess rips the blade from her arm before stabbing him in the eye. He screams in pain and staggers away before tess turns back to me. Tears fall from my face as she stumbles over to me before the only thing I can see, is darkness.

When I come to, I am laying in bed with a bandage around my leg and arms. I go to sit up but my head is pounding instantly. "Wow slow down there. You need to rest." My eyes get huge at the sound of her voice and i instantly wrap my arms around her neck. "Oh my god you're okay!" Tears stream down my face as I hold her tight causing her to chuckle. "Of course I am love, i wouldn't leave you like that. Are you okay though?"she gently grabs my face to look me over making me smile. "You scared me back there love. I always tell you to check yourself after a fight. You never know where you might have been cut." I shake my head and kiss her lips pulling her closer. "I'm fine I'm fine. I knew you would save me." She smiles at me and  then I remember something important. "Darren! Where is he? What was that back there? Is he okay?" I bombard her with questions and her face goes cold. "I told you we didn't need him." I give her a look and she stands up walking away from me. "What are you talking about? Without him we never would've won." She takes a deep breath and turns to me gently grabbing my chin. I blush a little under her intense stare before she says something that breaks my heart. "You need to stay away from him." I stare at her wide eyed and back out of her grasp. "How could you say that? He's my brother. My twin! I can't just leave him." She steps closer to me and I take a step back. "He's dangerous laya. He tried to kill me," I frown before folding my arms across my chest. "And you stabbed him in the eye. I don't know what's going on between you two but you can't keep me from him." She sighs and reaches for me again but I pull away. "Baby I'm just trying to protect you." She grabs my arm and I yank it away. "Don't touch me!" Suddenly her face gets serious and she steps closer towering over me. "You listen to me. I don't want you around him. He's got some shady shit going on, and I don't want you to get hurt! Stay away from him, understand?!" She grabs both of my arms holding me against the wall and i freeze. She's never looked at me like this. For 500 years she's looked at me with nothing but love and admiration. Right now,her eyes are dark. Devoid of anything but pure anger. A tear rolls down my face as I use all of my strength to push her off of me. She smashes into the far wall and cries out as the pain radiates through her body. "Ah!" She falls to the ground and before she can gather herself, I have her pinned to the wall by her throat as tears pour from my eyes. She was my love, my best friend. I could have spent all of eternity in her arms,but the person I am looking at right now, isn't her. This isn't my Tess. She gasps for air pulling at my arm but I won't budge. I get closer and stare into her eyes so she can see how much she's hurt me. "Don't look for me." I drop her to the ground and rush out the door before she can even catch her breath. As I run away, I can hear her screaming my name but I don't look back. "LAYA! PLEASE COME BACK!" I hear her voice break and I fall to my knees. I have to be hundreds of miles away by now yet our connection is still so strong. I crawl into a hole as I listen to her anguished cries for me. I can feel her pain. I can hear the desperation in her voice and I want nothing more than to pull her in my arms, but I can't. Something changed and until I know what it was, I need to keep my distance from her. I sniffle as I wrap my arms around my knees wondering what could have happened to my brother. Why doesn't she want me to be around him? So much so that she would react that way? A tear rolls down my cheek as I try to connect to my brother. I am met with nothing but silence and that scares me more than anything. "Darren...where did you go?"
