Chapter 1
After seven years of marriage, my husband, Luke Townsend, was known as a legend in the astronomy circle. He was also jokingly called a wife-spoiling maniac.
He always maintained a polite but distant boundary with everyone around him.
When his new assistant asked for his contact info, he just coldly rejected her.
The year he successfully proposed, he named an asteroid "LAW". He told everyone it meant "Luke Adores Waverly".
Since then, every time he discovered a new asteroid, he would name it with a secret code only we understood.
In the eyes of others, these might just be his work achievements. But to me, they were like silent love letters.
Until this morning, I found a strange, unfamiliar phone.
I entered my initials, and the screen smoothly unlocked.
I thought this was another one of his silent confessions of love. But unexpectedly, the phone was filled with a string of explicit texts between him and another woman.
And the name on the other end of the messages clearly belonged to his little assistant.
1.
I silently stuffed that phone back into the inner pocket of his suit jacket.
Just as I smoothed out the fabric, he walked over, still half-asleep. He gently wrapped his arms around me and rested his chin on my shoulder. "Waverly, did you pick out my outfit for me?"
Seeing me nod, he smiled, his eyes full of tenderness. He whispered, "If it weren't for you, I wouldn't even know how to take care of myself."
I forced a smile, but my heart felt inexplicably bitter.
Suddenly, his gaze landed on the suit jacket in my hands, and his eyes tightened. He immediately said, "I won't wear this one today. Hang it back up."
I paused slightly, gave him a look, and put the jacket back on the hanger.
He quietly breathed a sigh of relief. As if sensing my silence, he turned and looked at me with concern. "What's wrong? You don't look so good."
I gently shook my head. "It's nothing. I probably just didn't sleep well last night."
"How about I skip that seminar today?"
His hand slid down and gently held mine. He said earnestly, "I can stay home with you and let you get a good day of rest."
"I... it's fine. You should go." I smiled slightly, hiding the complex emotions in my eyes.
He kissed the top of my head, his voice filled with tender reliance. "Waverly, I really wouldn't know what to do without you."
Watching him leave, my mind couldn't help but drift back over the past seven years.
Luke had always been distant, polite, and cold to others.
If I hadn't seen those messages on that phone today, I never would have imagined he had this side to him.
Those texts surfaced in my mind, and every word pierced my heart like a needle.
"I'll wear that red dress you love next time we meet. I prepared it just for you, babe~"
"You look so damn hot in your suit today. I can't stop imagining what you look like when you take it off."
"Professor, no slacking off. Remember to think about me today too!"
I clenched my fingers tightly. A suffocating wave of anger and heartbreak surged in my chest.
Just then, familiar footsteps came from outside the door, and I turned to look.
"Why are you back?"
Luke stood at the door with a smile in his eyes. "I thought about it, and no seminar is more important than my wife."
He paused, as if thinking of something, and his smile grew even softer. "Besides, our seventh anniversary is coming up. Let's go pick out a gift for you today!"
I managed a strained smile. "Didn't you always use asteroid names as anniversary gifts before?"
He blinked, laughing as he rubbed my hair. "Yeah, but let's try something new this year. Shall we go to the jewelry store?"
At the store, he picked out a necklace almost at first glance. The pendant was a delicate, shining star.
Luke picked up the necklace and looked at me tenderly. His gaze was as soft as a fleeting star in the night sky.
The clerk chimed in perfectly, "Your husband has great taste. This necklace symbolizes eternal protection. It's perfectly suited for you, such a loving couple."
Luke smiled and gently brushed his fingers over the pendant. His eyes were focused and soft. "Yes, she is my star."
His words made my heart flutter slightly. The stabbing pain and suspicion seemed to fade a little at that moment.
After getting into the car, he suddenly frowned. "I think I left something in the store. Wait in the car, I'll go back and get it."
With that, he quickly got out and walked back into the shop.
After returning home, I reached into the pocket of that suit jacket again. Sure enough, the secret phone was gone.
The image of him smiling at the clerk flashed in my mind. The clerk's words about our "loving" relationship played like a warm movie scene.
I stood there in a daze, slowly suppressing the sourness in my heart. I silently told myself that maybe it was just his assistant's one-sided obsession.
