Chapter 3

[1] As far as I know, Joyce and Phil started an affair five years ago, and Joyce ended up pregnant.

At that time, Phil's business heavily relied on the support from Jenifer's family.

How could a woman used merely to satisfy his desires be more important than his career?

To prevent Jenifer from finding out, he threatened Joyce with a breakup and forced her to get an abortion.

He also gave Joyce a large sum of money for the abortion and to keep her silent, and the matter was left unresolved.

Unexpectedly, five years later, the two of them could still rekindle their intense passion upon meeting again!

Sure enough, not long after Phil left, Joyce hurriedly departed, claiming she had other matters at school.

Before leaving, Joyce gave me a significant, cautionary look.

It seemed Joyce was indifferent to the child she had to give up. Truly, she was unfit to be a mother!

[2] After Jenifer had cried until she was exhausted, she once again demanded that I arrest Jeffrey immediately.

I tried to calm her down, suggesting she take a moment to breathe.

Unexpectedly, she pulled out her phone and showed me a video.

"This is the classroom surveillance footage from two weeks ago. Look, isn't this Jeffrey?"

Because she was often busy managing her company and worried about her son who had just turned 18, she had invested a significant amount of money in the college. This investment granted her access to the surveillance footage of her son's activities at school.

Recently, she had been too busy to check on her son's daily performance at school. It wasn't until she received the call about his incident that she thought to review the footage.

And there it was—Jeffrey acting suspiciously in her son's classroom!

The man in the video wore a dark blue worker's uniform, with tanned skin and a thin frame. At that moment, he was repairing the classroom's air conditioner. The cooling unit seemed to be broken, and it took him about ten minutes to finish the job and leave the classroom.

Even though it had been five years since I last saw him, I recognized Jeffrey immediately due to the strong impression he made on me.

"It's him, but it looks like he's just fixing the air conditioner. He didn't do anything else," I said, puzzled.

"Then he must have tampered with the air conditioner. My son has always been healthy, but he started feeling unwell two weeks ago, right after Jeffrey was in his classroom."

"He's the culprit. It can only be him!"

"Because my son bullied his son, causing his son to attempt suicide, he's now back for revenge!"

Jenifer's face was almost unrecognizable with rage, and she shook my shoulders violently.

I tried to reason with her calmly.

"Mrs. Olson, that's impossible. Your son wasn't the only one in that classroom; other students were there too, and they didn't experience any issues."

But she wouldn't listen and kept insisting that I arrest him immediately.

When I explained that we needed evidence to make an arrest, she pushed me away and even threatened, "Connor, don't forget that five years ago, you took my money and falsified evidence. Back then, you didn't care about evidence, so why now?"

Her words sent a chill down my spine, and my tone softened.

"Mrs. Olson, I'll contact the forensics team right away and have them take samples from the air conditioner. Once we get the lab results, we'll see if there are any toxic substances."

"If there are, I'll arrest Jeffrey immediately!"

Only then did Jenifer's emotions slightly calm down.

"I'll give you two days. In two days, I want to see Jeffrey in the interrogation room at the police station!"

I sighed and nodded in reluctant agreement.

As Jenifer's figure disappeared from the hospital room, I let out a bitter laugh.

Connor, oh Connor, one mistake can haunt you forever!

Taking her money back then, even now as a sergeant, I'm still under her control.
