Chapter 3 A Game of Shadows

Elena knew the dinner invitation wasn't just about a meal. Dante Vasquez never did anything without a calculated reason. It was a test, another step in his cat-and-mouse game, and she had no choice but to play along.

She arrived at the restaurant ten minutes early. La Mirage was an exclusive, dimly lit place with an air of quiet sophistication. It was the kind of restaurant where the elite made deals over vintage wine and perfectly seared steaks. The maître d' led her to a private table near the back, far from prying eyes. A bottle of wine already sat on the table, waiting.

Dante arrived precisely on time, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that screamed power. His presence was effortless, commanding, like he owned every space he walked into. And maybe he did.

"You're early," he observed as he slid into his seat.

"I like to be prepared," she replied, mirroring his confident posture.

A slow smirk curved his lips. "Good. Preparation is everything in this business."

The waiter approached, and Dante barely glanced at the menu before ordering. "Filet mignon, rare. And another bottle of the '96 Bordeaux."

Elena took a beat before ordering her own meal. She refused to be rattled by his dominance. "Salmon, medium. And just water for me."

Dante nodded approvingly. "Disciplined. I like that."

She forced a polite smile. "I imagine you don't tolerate anything less in your employees."

His dark eyes gleamed. "That depends on the employee."

The tension between them was a taut wire, humming with unspoken words. He was studying her, waiting for cracks to appear. But she had spent years perfecting the art of deception. She could play this game just as well as he could.

"So," he said, swirling his wine glass. "You've had quite the first week."

Elena took a sip of water. "I've learned a lot."

"I imagine you have." His gaze was piercing. "And what do you think of Vasquez Hotels so far?"

She knew this was another test. A wrong answer could cost her everything. "It's impressive. The scale, the ambition. You've built something remarkable."

Dante tilted his head slightly. "You're not easily impressed, are you?"

"I don't give compliments lightly."

His lips quirked. "Neither do I."

The waiter returned with their meals, and for a moment, silence settled between them as they ate. But the quiet wasn't comfortable-it was charged, like the air before a storm.

Dante set his knife down, eyes never leaving her. "Tell me, Elena. What is it you really want?"

The question was casual, but she knew better. He was digging, peeling back layers, searching for weaknesses.

She met his gaze head-on. "I want to be the best at what I do."

"Ambition." He nodded slightly. "I admire that."

"And you?" she countered. "What does Dante Vasquez want?"

His smirk returned, but there was something sharper beneath it. "Control."

The word lingered between them, heavy with meaning.

Elena leaned back, carefully assessing him. "Control is a fragile thing. It can be taken away."

Dante chuckled, low and dark. "Not if you play the game right."

Their eyes locked, and for a moment, the world around them disappeared. It wasn't just a battle of words-it was something deeper, something dangerous.

He set his glass down. "I think we're alike, you and I."

Elena arched a brow. "How so?"

"We both know how to wear masks." His voice dropped to a near whisper. "We both know how to play the long game."

A flicker of unease curled in her stomach. Did he suspect? Or was he simply testing her limits?

She forced a cool smile. "And what game are we playing now?"

Dante's gaze darkened. "One where only the strongest survive."

The ride home was quiet, but Elena's mind was anything but. Dante Vasquez was sharper than she had anticipated. Every move he made, every word he spoke, was deliberate. He was watching her, calculating.

She arrived at her apartment, locking the door behind her before pulling out her laptop. She had secured the encrypted files from Vasquez Hotels earlier that week, but she hadn't dared to dig too deep. Not yet. Now, with Dante closing in, she couldn't afford to wait any longer.

She opened the first document, scanning through financial reports, project proposals-everything seemed normal at first glance. But then she found something. A shell company tied to one of Vasquez Hotels' offshore accounts.

Her heart pounded. This was it. The thread she needed to pull.

A notification popped up on her screen-an incoming message. Her stomach clenched when she saw the sender.

Unknown Number: You're in deep, aren't you?

Her pulse thundered.

She typed back. Who is this?

The reply came almost instantly. Someone who knows you're playing with fire.

Elena's breath caught in her throat. Had someone been watching her? Had Dante?

Her fingers hovered over the keyboard. She had to be careful. What do you want?

A pause. Then: To warn you. Vasquez doesn't lose. Ever.

Elena swallowed hard, staring at the screen. She had spent years preparing for this moment, years crafting her plan. But now, the game was changing.

And Dante Vasquez was far more dangerous than she had ever imagined.

That's everything available right now.
