Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Astoria ballroom cast a brilliant, almost blinding light over the crowd. I smoothed down the front of my silk gown, the fabric cool against my skin. Tonight was supposed to be the culmination of everything, the peak of my entire professional life. My project, "Greenhaven," was about to be unveiled. For five years, I had poured every waking moment, every ounce of my soul, into its design. It wasn't just a building complex, it was a revolution in sustainable urban living.

My heart beat a little faster, a mix of excitement and nerves. I scanned the room for David. He was supposed to be by my side. We were a team, in work and in life. He was the real estate genius, I was the architect. Together, we were going to change the world. And after tonight, after this launch, a wedding was next. He' d promised.

My stomach churned. A faint, persistent anxiety had been buzzing under my skin for weeks. David had been distant, locked in late-night meetings he claimed were about securing final funding. He' d told me to trust him, that he was handling the business side so I could focus on the creative. I had trusted him. Completely.

I saw a commotion near the stage. The CEO of OmniCorp, the development giant backing our project, was walking toward the podium. But David wasn't with him. Instead, another figure glided to the stage, someone I knew all too well. Victoria Hayes. My most ruthless competitor. A woman who built her career on stolen ideas and shattered partnerships. She stood next to David, who had appeared from the side of the stage, his arm possessively around her waist.

A cold dread washed over me. The low hum of the crowd quieted as the CEO tapped the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for joining us for a truly historic announcement. Tonight, OmniCorp, in partnership with two of the brightest minds in our industry, David Thompson and Victoria Hayes, is proud to unveil a project that will redefine the future of our cities."

My breath caught in my throat. David and Victoria?

The screen behind them lit up, not with the "Greenhaven" logo I had designed, but with a sleek, ostentatious crest that read "Elysian Fields." Then, my designs flashed across the screen. My layouts, my energy systems, my signature atrium design. It was all there, every meticulous detail, but my name was nowhere to be seen. It was my work, my heart, my soul, being presented as theirs.

The room erupted in applause. I stood frozen, the noise a deafening roar in my ears. I felt hundreds of eyes on me, whispers starting to ripple through the crowd. They knew. They knew "Greenhaven" was my project.

Then David leaned into the microphone, his smile as bright and false as the stage lights.

"Thank you. Victoria and I have poured our hearts into 'Elysian Fields.' But tonight, I have another announcement, a personal one."

He turned to Victoria, taking her hand. He looked out at the audience, his eyes sweeping past me as if I were a stranger.

"Victoria has not only been my partner in business but has become the partner of my heart. We're engaged."

The applause was thunderous this time. Cameras flashed, capturing the image of the happy couple, the thieves who had just stolen my life's work and my future. The humiliation was a physical force, pressing down on me, suffocating me. I felt my phone vibrate in my clutch. A text from my boss.

Don't come to the office tomorrow. You're done. We can't be associated with this kind of scandal.

Blacklisted. Ruined. In a single moment, I had lost my project, my fiancé, and my career. The walls of the ballroom seemed to be closing in. I had to get out. I turned and pushed my way through the crowd, ignoring the pitying and scornful looks.

I stumbled out into the cool night air, the city lights blurring through my tears. I had nowhere to go. My apartment was our apartment. My friends were our friends. My world had been built around David.

I pulled out my phone, my fingers trembling as I scrolled through my contacts. There was one name, one number I hadn't called in almost a decade. A person I' d been told to stay away from. My estranged uncle, Robert. He was a recluse, a brilliant but disgraced civil engineer who had vanished from public life years ago. I had no other choice. It was a desperate, last-ditch call.

He answered on the second ring, his voice raspy, unused.

"Sarah?"

"Uncle Robert," I choked out, the sound of my own voice breaking. "I need help. I have nowhere else to go."

There was a long pause on the other end of the line. Then, he spoke, his voice low and steady.

"I have a car coming for you. It will be there in twenty minutes. It will bring you to me."

He hung up. I slid down against the cold brick wall of the building, my silk gown pooling around me in the dirt. I took a deep breath, the city air thick with exhaust and rain. This was it. I was leaving my old life behind, a life that had been a lie. I was running toward a future I couldn't even imagine, a future that began with a man I barely knew.
