Chapter 3 BOND BY VOWS.

The church bells rang, their solemn toll echoing across the city as if mourning a life that would never be lived. Ivana stood in front of the mirror, the weight of her wedding dress pressing heavily on her shoulders. The intricate lace was a delicate cage, beautiful yet confining, its tight seams a reminder of the fate she could not escape.

Her reflection stared back at her-an image of grace and elegance on the outside, but her eyes betrayed the turmoil within. She clenched her hands at her sides, fighting the urge to rip the dress away and run until her legs gave out.

"Are you ready, my dear?" a soft voice asked from the doorway.

She turned to see her mother, a fragile woman with gentle eyes clouded by sadness. Mrs. Jonathan stepped into the room, her lips trembling as she reached out to adjust Ivana's veil.

"You look beautiful," her mother whispered, though her voice cracked with sorrow.

Ivana swallowed the lump in her throat. "Is this what love looks like, Mother? A sacrifice wrapped in silk?"

Her mother's eyes filled with tears. "Sometimes love means doing what's necessary to protect the ones we care for."

The words offered no comfort. She knew her mother was trying to be strong, but her heart ached with betrayal. She wasn't walking into a union of love-she was being led into a gilded prison.

---

The ceremony was a spectacle.

The grand hall was filled with the city's elite, their jewels glittering beneath the soft glow of chandeliers. Rows of flowers lined the aisle, their delicate fragrance filling the air with a sweetness that turned Ivana's stomach. Every eye watched her as she walked, her hand resting lightly on her father's arm. His grip was trembling, but she couldn't bring herself to meet his gaze.

At the altar stood Patrick, resplendent in a custom-tailored suit. He exuded confidence and control, his eyes never leaving her as she approached. His smile was polished, but there was no warmth in it.

When her father placed her hand in Patrick's, Ivana felt the coldness of his touch sear her skin. She wanted to pull away, but her fingers remained in his, bound by the invisible chains of duty and desperation.

"Do you, Patrick Monroe, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or for worse?"

"I do," Patrick said without hesitation.

Ivana's chest tightened as the officiant turned to her.

"And do you, Ivana Jonathan, take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or for worse?"

Her lips parted, but no words came. For a brief, agonizing moment, the world seemed to hold its breath.

Patrick's grip on her hand tightened.

"I do," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

The ring slipped onto her finger like a shackle.

---

The reception was a blur of music, laughter, and meaningless conversations. Ivana moved through the crowd like a ghost, smiling when required, speaking when spoken to, but her mind was elsewhere. Every glance at Patrick reminded her of the price she had paid.

"Mrs. Monroe." His voice, low and commanding, sent a shiver down her spine.

She turned to face him, her smile forced. "Yes?"

"Dance with me."

It wasn't a request.

He led her onto the dance floor, his hand firm against her waist. The music swelled, a waltz that should have been romantic but felt more like a funeral march.

"You look stunning," he murmured, his lips close to her ear. "A perfect picture of obedience."

Anger flared in her chest. "Is that what you wanted? A picture? A trophy to display?"

Patrick's smile was cold. "I wanted control. And now I have it."

Her eyes burned with unshed tears, but she refused to let them fall. "You'll never have my heart."

He chuckled softly. "Hearts are fragile things, easily broken. Be careful with yours, my dear."

---

As the night drew to a close, Ivana sat alone on the balcony, the cool breeze a small comfort against the firestorm within her. Below, the city glittered with life, a world that continued turning, indifferent to her suffering.

"You're far from the celebration," a voice said from behind her.

She turned, startled, to see a man standing in the shadows. His dark eyes were filled with something she hadn't seen all evening-kindness.

"I'm Dominic," he said, stepping into the light.

Patrick's brother.

Ivana had heard of him but had never met him in person. He was different from Patrick-softer around the edges, with a warmth that seemed out of place in a family of cold ambition.

"Congratulations," he said, though his tone was somber. "You've made quite the match."

Her lips twitched into a bitter smile. "A match made in hell."

Dominic's eyes softened with understanding. "I know it isn't easy."

"You know nothing about it," she whispered, her voice sharp with pain.

"Maybe not," he conceded. "But I do know that chains, no matter how gilded, are still chains."

Their eyes met, and for a fleeting moment, she felt seen-truly seen. It was a small, fragile connection, but it sparked something within her.

"You should go back inside," he said gently. "It wouldn't do for your husband to find us here."

Ivana nodded, the weight of her reality settling once more on her shoulders. "Thank you, Dominic."

He smiled, a sad, knowing smile. "Take care, Ivana."

As he disappeared into the shadows, she felt the stirrings of something dangerous-hope.

That's everything available right now.
