Chapter 2

Sophia stepped onto the bustling streets of Manhattan, the noise and energy washing over her as she tried to calm the adrenaline surging through her veins. Landing this project felt like a victory, but Liam Carter's lingering gaze and sharp words left her unsettled. There was something about him-something more than his arrogance and power. It was the way he seemed to dissect her with a single look, as if peeling away layers she didn't even know she had.

"Focus, Sophia," she muttered to herself, weaving through the throngs of pedestrians. She had a job to do, and nothing-not even Liam Carter-was going to distract her from it.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket, jolting her out of her thoughts. She pulled it out to see a text from her assistant, Grace.

Grace: How did it go?

Sophia quickly typed back.

Sophia: We got it. Start clearing the schedule. This is going to take all our focus.

The reply came almost instantly.

Grace: YES! Drinks tonight to celebrate?

Sophia hesitated. The idea of unwinding sounded tempting, but she shook her head, slipping her phone back into her pocket. There was no time for distractions. She needed to dive into the project immediately.

Later that evening, Sophia spread her sketches across the long dining table in her small Brooklyn apartment. The contrast between her modest home and the opulence of Liam Carter's world was stark, but she preferred it this way. It grounded her.

The soft hum of jazz played from her speakers as she lost herself in her work. She barely noticed the hours slipping by until the faint buzz of her phone pulled her attention again.

She frowned at the unfamiliar number flashing on the screen.

"Hello?"

"Sophia Dark."

Her heart skipped at the unmistakable voice. She straightened in her chair, gripping the phone tightly. "Mr. Carter."

"I trust I'm not interrupting anything important."

She glanced at the scattered papers in front of her. "Not at all. What can I do for you?"

There was a pause, just long enough to make her uncomfortable. "I like to keep a close eye on my projects, Miss Dark. I'll need you to come by the St. Regis tomorrow at noon. We'll be walking through the space together."

Sophia blinked. She hadn't expected him to be so hands-on. Most of her high-profile clients preferred to delegate these details.

"Of course," she said, masking her surprise. "I'll be there."

"Good." His voice dropped, a low rumble that sent an involuntary shiver down her spine. "And, Miss Dark, come prepared. I don't waste time."

The line went dead before she could respond.

Sophia stared at the phone, a mixture of irritation and intrigue bubbling in her chest. Liam Carter was going to be a challenge-but she wasn't about to let him intimidate her.

The next day, the St. Regis Hotel exuded old-world charm with its grand chandeliers, gilded accents, and sweeping staircases. Sophia arrived ten minutes early, determined to make a good impression.

She spotted Liam immediately. He stood near the lobby's marble fountain, his sharp suit tailored to perfection, a presence that commanded attention even in a space filled with luxury.

"You're early," he noted as she approached, his lips curving into something that wasn't quite a smile.

"I believe in being prepared," she replied smoothly.

"Good." His eyes scanned her, lingering for a second longer than necessary. "Let's get started."

He led her through the hotel, his long strides forcing her to keep pace. As they moved from the grand lobby to the penthouse suites, Liam peppered her with questions, his tone sharp and demanding.

"What's your vision for this space?"

"How do you plan to modernize without losing the hotel's character?"

"Why these materials? Why this color palette?"

Sophia answered each question with precision, refusing to let him see her flinch under his scrutiny. But the closer they worked, the more she became acutely aware of him-not just his questions, but the way he moved, the way his presence seemed to fill the room.

At one point, as they stood in the penthouse's main living area, he leaned in slightly, his voice low.

"Tell me, Miss Dark," he said, his gaze fixed on hers, "what drives you? Why are you so determined to succeed?"

The question caught her off guard. She hesitated, unsure if it was a genuine inquiry or another test.

"I believe in creating something lasting," she said finally. "Something that speaks for itself."

His eyes searched hers, as if weighing her words. "And what about your past? Does that drive you too?"

Her breath hitched, but she quickly recovered. "My past is irrelevant, Mr. Carter. I focus on the future."

His lips curved into a faint smile, but there was something unsettling in his gaze. "Interesting answer."

By the time the walkthrough ended, Sophia was drained. Liam's intensity was like nothing she'd ever encountered before. But as she packed up her things and prepared to leave, he stopped her.

"Miss Dark," he said, his voice soft but firm, "I'll expect updates every step of the way. And one more thing-never underestimate me."

She blinked, unsure of how to respond. "I wouldn't dream of it."

As she walked away, she could feel his eyes on her, a gaze that was as unsettling as it was electrifying.

Sophia had no idea what she was getting into-but neither did Liam. Because for all his power and control, Sophia Dark was a challenge he wasn't prepared for. And his obsession was only just beginning.
