Chapter 3 A Shattered Dream

"Where is my husband?" Hailey demanded, her voice rising, ignoring the ache in her head.

"He's...he's in intensive care. The impact... it was severe," the nurse replied.

Hailey's heart dropped, her world spinning as she struggled to comprehend the nurse's words. "What?" Her voice came out as a whisper, trembling with disbelief. Hailey shook her head. "No... no. Please tell me he's okay?"

The nurse's hand remained on her shoulder, a comforting support in the midst of Hailey's turmoil. "We're doing everything we can. He's in the best hands possible."

Hailey felt her throat tighten as she sank back onto the bed, tears slipping down her cheeks. Her mind refused to believe it. Just hours ago, they'd been laughing, dreaming, sharing sweet promises of a life together. And now, her husband was lying in a hospital room, trapped in a state of unconsciousness that left their future uncertain.

"And our chauffeur, Jeremy?" Hailey asked.

The nurse hesitated, her expression grim. "Jeremy is also in a critical condition, Mrs. Cooper. They're doing everything they can for both of them, but his injuries were severe."

Hailey felt the room tilt around her as a wave of dizziness hit her. Both Landon and Jeremy were now fighting for their lives. She clenched her fists, desperation boiling within her.

"I need to see my husband," Hailey demanded, her voice thick with urgency as she struggled to push herself up from the bed.

The nurse quickly but gently eased her back. "Mrs. Cooper, please. You need to rest and let us monitor your condition. The doctors will give you an update on your husband's progress soon."

"Rest?" Hailey's voice cracked, the word a foreign concept in the chaos consuming her mind. "I can't rest while he's... while he's like that. I need to be with him. My husband needs me by his side."

The nurse offered her a sympathetic look, her hand firm on Hailey's shoulder. "I know this is difficult, but you need to regain your strength. I'll let the doctors know you're anxious to see him. They'll come speak with you shortly."

Hailey's shoulder slumped as she watched the nurse leave the room. Left alone, Hailey felt as if she'd been cast adrift. Every passing minute felt unbearable, stretching out into an eternity as she waited, each tick of the clock a reminder of the unknown she now faced. She twisted her hands in the thin hospital blanket, her mind jumbling, her heart aching. She sitting here in this hospital room waiting for some reports felt like a betrayal to Landon, who lay alone, helpless, just down the hall.

Just then, she heard hurried footsteps in the hallway, growing louder. A moment later, her hospital room door opened, and her family spilled inside; her mother, her father, and Alicia, her older sister. Their faces mirrored her anguish, and Alicia rushed to her side, taking Hailey's hand.

"Oh, Hailey. I'm glad you're alive," Alicia whispered, her voice trembling as she pulled her into a gentle embrace.

Hailey nodded, but her expression was hollow, her gaze distant. "But Landon... he's not okay. He's fighting for his life, Alicia. He's in a critical condition." Her voice broke, and she sank into Alicia's arms, feeling her sister's comforting presence as she sobbed to the crook of her neck.

Her mother moved to her bedside, brushing a hand over Hailey's hair in a soothing gesture. "Sweetheart, please don't cry. He'll be okay," Jane assured her.

Hailey closed her eyes, taking in their familiar voices, trying to anchor herself in their love. But it was nearly impossible to shake the gnawing terror, the helplessness that gripped her. The only person she wanted by her side, the only voice she longed to hear, was Landon's.

"Have the doctors told you anything more about his condition?" her father, Gerald, asked gently.

Hailey shook her head. "Nothing, father. They're supposed to give me an update soon, but I don't know how long it will be. I just want to see him. I need to see him." Her hands quivered as she spoke.

Alicia tightened her hold on Hailey's hand, her gaze mild. "You will, Hailey. As soon as they allow it. And until then, we'll wait with you."
