Chapter 3 A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL

The crimson dress fit her like a second skin.  Elena stood in front of the full-length mirror in the luxurious guest suite, barely recognizing the woman staring back. The woman in the mirror had her dark hair swept up, her skin scrubbed clean of the Judge's blood, and her body draped in heavy, expensive silk that whispered against her knees.  She looked like a high-society bride.  She felt like a soldier putting on armor.  Elena gripped the edge of the marble vanity. Her hands, which had been steady while holding a scalpel inside a dying man's chest, were trembling again. She took a deep, shuddering breath. *You are not going to break,* she told herself. *You survived the alley. You survived the gunman. You will survive Marcus Blackwood.* She walked out of the suite.  The penthouse was a masterpiece of cold, modern luxury. Floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the glittering Chicago skyline, but the glass was tinted and reinforced. It felt less like a home and more like a fortress. A gilded cage.  In the grand living room, Marcus was waiting.  He had changed into a fresh, immaculate black suit. He stood by the window, a glass of amber liquid in his hand, looking like a predator surveying his territory. A terrified-looking elderly judge stood awkwardly in the corner, clutching a bible.  Marcus turned as she entered. His grey eyes swept over her, slow and deliberate, lingering on the crimson fabric. For a fraction of a second, something dark and hungry flashed in his gaze. Then, it was gone, replaced by that infuriating, icy calm.  "Right on time," he said.  Elena stopped a few feet away from him. "I'm not doing this until we set some ground rules." The judge squeaked in protest, but Marcus simply raised a hand, silencing him. He looked at Elena, mildly amused. "The priest is waiting, Doctor." "I don't care if the Pope is waiting," Elena snapped. "This is a business transaction. And I don't sign anything without reading the fine print." Marcus studied her for a moment. Then, he walked to a large mahogany desk and picked up a thick, leather-bound folder. He slid it across the polished wood toward her.  Elena opened it. The top page was a marriage contract.  She read the clauses, her anger rising with every line.  *Clause 1: The Wife will reside in the penthouse at all times.**Clause 2: The Wife will not leave the premises without the Husband or an assigned armed escort.**Clause 3: Separate bedrooms will be maintained, but public displays of affection are mandatory to maintain the facade.* "What am I, a prisoner?" she hissed.  "You're a target," Marcus corrected, his voice flat. "And I don't protect liabilities. I protect assets." Elena grabbed a silver pen from the desk. With a vicious stroke, she crossed out Clause 2. In the margin, she wrote in sharp, angry handwriting: *I will continue to operate. I am a surgeon. I will not be a prisoner.* She spun the folder around and pushed it back toward him. "Sign it." Marcus looked at her amendment. His jaw tightened. "Your hospital is compromised. Going back to work is a death sentence." "I save lives, Mr. Blackwood," she said, her voice trembling with fury. "It is the only thing I have left. If you take that away from me, you might as well let Cortez shoot me right now." A heavy silence stretched between them. Marcus's grey eyes searched her face, looking for a crack in her resolve. He found none.  "Fine," he said quietly. He picked up the pen and signed his name next to hers.  Elena exhaled, the tension leaving her shoulders slightly. She looked at the man who was now, legally, her husband. "Why?" she asked, the question barely a whisper. "Why are you really doing this?" Marcus capped the pen. He turned and walked back toward the window, his back to her. When he spoke, the ice in his voice had melted into something raw and jagged.  "Rafael Cortez killed my brother," he said. "He was a DEA agent. Undercover. Cortez found out, and he didn't just kill him. He made a spectacle of it."  He turned back to her. In the dim light of the penthouse, he didn't look like an untouchable billionaire. He looked like a man hollowed out by grief. "I'm not saving you out of the goodness of my heart, Doctor," Marcus said softly. "I'm using you to get my revenge." Elena stared at him. She had been terrified of him, angry at him. But she hadn't expected to pity him.  "We're the same," she realized aloud. "Both of us are just trying to survive the monsters." Marcus didn't reply. He simply nodded toward the judge. "Let's get this over with." The ceremony was brutally short. No music. No flowers. Just a series of legal vows spoken in a silent room. When the judge pronounced them husband and wife, Marcus produced a small velvet box.  He pulled out a ring. It was a massive, glittering diamond, set in a band of cold platinum.  Elena's heart hammered as he took her left hand. His fingers were warm against her icy skin. He slid the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly. It was heavy.  Marcus leaned in for the traditional kiss.  Elena panicked. She turned her head at the last second, offering him her cheek.  She felt his breath against her skin. He didn't force her. He just hovered there, his lips a millimeter from her cheek, his body radiating a dangerous, possessive heat.  "You'll have to kiss me eventually, wife," he murmured, his voice a low, rough rumble that sent a shiver down her spine. He straightened up, his face once again an unreadable mask. "The judge will see himself out." Marcus led her down a long, dimly lit hallway. The penthouse was dead silent. He stopped in front of a set of heavy double doors at the end of the hall. Elena assumed it was her room, but before she could reach for the handle, Marcus stepped into her space.  He moved fast. One hand braced against the doorframe beside her head, boxing her in. His chest was inches from hers. She had to tilt her head back to look at him.  The air left her lungs. He smelled like cedar and dark spices.  "Your room is across the hall," he said, his grey eyes dropping to her lips. "Sleep well, Dr. Vasquez." He stepped back and disappeared into the master bedroom, closing the door behind him.  Elena stood frozen in the hallway for a full minute, her heart threatening to beat out of her chest. She stumbled into her own room and slammed the door shut, twisting the deadbolt with shaking hands. She was alone. Finally. She leaned against the door, sliding down until she was sitting on the floor. The carpet was plush and expensive. She looked down at her left hand. The diamond ring caught the moonlight. She grabbed it, trying to twist it off her finger.  It wouldn't budge. It felt like a shackle. She pushed herself up and walked over to the large mahogany desk in the corner. Her foster mother, Karen, had insisted she carry a laptop for work. It sat on the desk, connected to Marcus's secure Wi-Fi.  Elena opened it, desperate for a distraction, for some sense of normalcy.  A news alert flashed on the screen, bright red and pulsing.  **BREAKING NEWS: DISTRICT JUDGE WILLIAM HOLLOWAY PRONOUNCED DEAD IN HIS HOSPITAL BED. POLICE INVESTIGATING AS HOMICIDE.** Elena's blood ran cold.  *No.*  She had saved him. She had closed his chest. He was stable. He was supposed to go into protective custody. Someone had walked into the ICU, past the police detail, and killed him.  The realization hit her like a physical blow. The cartel's reach was inside the hospital. It was inside the police. It was everywhere.  Before she could process the horror, her phone rang.  It was sitting on the bed. The screen lit up. The caller ID read: **KAREN (MOM)**.  Relief washed over her. Karen was okay. She reached for the phone, swiping to answer.  "Karen?" Elena gasped, her voice cracking. "Are you okay? Are you safe?" There was no answer. Just the low hum of static.  Then, a deep, cold male voice spoke. It wasn't Karen.  "We're watching your mother sleep right now, Dr. Vasquez," the voice said, thick with a Spanish accent. "She looks so peaceful in her little blue nightgown." Elena's breath stopped. She gripped the phone so hard the plastic creaked. "If you touch her-" "We won't," the voice interrupted smoothly. "As long as you do exactly what we say. You will retract your police statement by dawn. You will tell them you were mistaken. You didn't see anything. And if you don't..."  The man chuckled, a horrifying, dead sound. "Well, we'll send her to you in pieces. A finger for every hour you're late. Do you understand?" Tears burned in Elena's eyes. She couldn't breathe. She couldn't think. She was trapped in a penthouse, married to a monster, and the real monsters were holding her mother.  "Yes," she choked out. "I understand." The line clicked dead.  Elena sat in the dark, the heavy diamond ring burning on her finger, and sobbed. ***
