Chapter 3 Public Eyes
Aria's POV I do not return to work. HR message stays on my phone like a stamp. TEMPORARY SUSPENSION. Temporary sounds like control. It feels permanent. Morning light hits the penthouse glass. I do not sleep. My body stays awake without permission. Adrian stands near the window. Phone in hand. Silent. Focused. I do not ask what he is doing. I already know everything in this house connects back to control. A knock breaks the silence. Lucas enters first. Fast steps. Tension in his shoulders. "We have escalation, " he says. Adrian does not turn. "Speak. " "Vanessa went live again, " Lucas replies. "This time with an investor guest. "I look up. Lucas continues. "She is framing the contract as coercion. " My chest tightens. "What investor, " I ask. Lucas hesitates. "Marcus Vale. " That name shifts the room. Adrian finally turns. His expression changes. Slight. Controlled. Not calm. "Vale is speaking publicly, " Adrian says. Lucas nods. My phone buzzes. Unknown link sent. I open it. Live broadcast. Vanessa sits on camera with a man beside her. Expensive suit. Calm face. Marcus Vale. Vanessa speaks first. "She was introduced without consent from the public, " she says. "And the board allowed it. " Marcus Vale leans in. "This raises governance concerns. " My fingers go cold. Vanessa continues. decisions. " "Adrian Blackwood does not separate personal emotion from corporate Marcus looks at the camera. "We are reviewing investment exposure. "I look up at Adrian. He watches the screen without blinking. Lucas speaks low. Silence spreads. Adrian moves first. "Get the legal team ready. " "This is not just media anymore. This is financial pressure. " Lucas nods and exits fast. I remain standing. "What happens now, " I ask. Adrian looks at me. "They are trying to force a correction. " "Correction of what, " I ask. His answer is short. "You. " That word lands heavier than anything else. ⸻ Blackwood Enterprises feels different today. People avoid eye contact. Whispers sharpen. Security presence doubles. I walk through the lobby and feel it immediately. Not curiosity. Evaluation. A receptionist lowers her voice. "She is still here. " I hear it. I do not react. Elevator opens.Lucas is inside again. "You should not be here, " he says. "I do not have anywhere else. " He looks away. Floor rises. Executive level is louder today. Phones ring more. People move faster. Adrian's office door is open. Inside, three people I have never seen before stand near his desk. Legal team. One woman turns first. Sharp eyes. Tight expression. Amara Blake. She looks at me like she already read every version of me. "So this is her, " she says. Adrian speaks. "Amara, focus. " She ignores him. "I am focusing. " I step inside. "Who are you?" She answers without hesitation. "Legal counsel. " Then she adds, "And the person who will decide if this contract survives public review. " Silence hits the room.Adrian does not interrupt. That tells me everything. Amara continues. exposes the company. " "You signed a public relationship agreement with financial implications. That I look at Adrian. "You did not tell me that. " He answers, "It was not necessary at the time. " My voice sharpens. "Everything becomes necessary after I agree to it. " Amara watches us. "That is correct. " Lucas shifts behind her. Another man enters the room behind Amara. Marcus Vale. He is not on a screen now. He is here. He looks at me first. Then Adrian. "You escalated fast, " Marcus says. Adrian's voice is flat. "You came without request. " Marcus smiles slightly. "Investors do not request. They evaluate. " I step forward. "Why are you here. " He turns to me. "Because your situation affects financial stability. " My jaw tightens. "I am not a financial variable. " Amara interrupts. "Right now you are. " That hits harder than Marcus.Silence spreads again. Adrian finally speaks. Marcus folds his hands. "State your position. " "End the public contract. " My chest tightens. Amara adds, I turn sharply. She meets my eyes. "Or restructure with transparency clauses and external oversight. " "Oversight of what. " "You. " ⸻ Later. Conference room empties. Marcus leaves first. Amara follows after a final glance at me. Lucas stays behind. "You did not know they would push this far, " I say. He exhales. "No. " Adrian stands by the glass wall. I turn to him. "This is bigger than your control now. " He does not deny it. That silence returns again. ⸻ Night. I leave the building alone.First time since everything started. Air outside feels colder. Phones follow me again. Reporters. Cameras. Voices. "Is the contract breaking?" "Are investors pulling out?" "Are you staying with him?" I walk faster. Someone grabs my arm. I turn sharply. A woman stands in front of me. Young. Calm face. Eyes too focused. "I am not press, " she says. I pull my arm back. "Then move. " She shakes her head. "I work with Vanessa. " My stomach tightens. She steps closer. She hands me an envelope. I do not take it. She drops it at my feet instead. "She told me to give you something. "Then walks away. I stand still. I pick it up. Inside is a printed photo. Adrian. Not recent. Older. Beside him, Vanessa. But that is not what catches me. Behind them. Hospital documents. My mother's name. My breath stops. A note underneath. YOU WERE CHOSEN FOR A REASON. My fingers shake slightly. ⸻ Penthouse. I enter without knocking. Adrian turns immediately. He sees my face. "What happened, " he asks.I throw the envelope on the table. "It is connected, " I say. He opens it. His expression changes for the first time. Not confusion. Recognition. Lucas steps forward. I answer. "Vanessa's people. " "Where did this come from. " Silence. Adrian looks at the file longer than anything else in this room. Then he says one sentence. "This was not supposed to be public. " My chest tightens. I step back. "What was not supposed to be public. " He does not answer immediately. That delay says everything. Lucas looks between us. "Adrian, " I say again. "What is this. " He finally looks at me. And for the first time since this began. His answer is not about control. It is about history."You were not selected randomly, " he says. Silence breaks differently this time. Not loud. Just irreversible.
