Chapter 2

Sarah felt the blood drain from her face.

"Compelling evidence?" she repeated, her voice barely a whisper.

"My father... it can't be."

She thought of John Miller, his booming laugh, his unwavering belief in their country.

The man who taught her to sail, to believe in herself.

"I want to see it," she said, a new firmness in her tone. "The flash drive. Or a copy of these files."

Ethan Hayes watched her, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes.

He gestured towards his large monitor. "Come closer."

Sarah stood, her legs unsteady, and walked towards his desk.

He clicked his mouse, and a document appeared on the screen.

A summary of digital evidence. Heavily redacted.

Even with the blacked-out sections, the information was damning.

Dates, transaction codes, references to encryption keys she knew were unique to her father's private system.

It felt like a physical blow.

"This is a frame-up," she insisted, her voice rising.

"It has to be. A sophisticated hack. Someone planted that drive."

Ethan Hayes leaned back in his chair, his eyes never leaving her face.

He was watching her every reaction, every flicker of emotion.

"So, Ms. Miller," he asked, his voice soft, almost gentle, yet laced with steel.

"What do you propose I do with this 'compelling' evidence against your father?"

The question hung in the air, heavy and suffocating.

Desperation clawed at her. Her father's face, pale and drawn at his arrest, flashed in her mind.

Her mother, crumbling under the strain.

Sarah sank slightly, not to her knees, but a desperate bow of her head, her shoulders slumping.

"Please, Mr. Hayes," she whispered, the words torn from her.

"I'm begging you. Look deeper. There has to be a mistake. He's innocent."

A small, almost imperceptible smirk touched Ethan's lips.

"Beg me?" he murmured. His eyes roamed over her, slowly, deliberately.

"Is that all? Just words?"

His tone was low, intimate, laden with insinuation.

The unspoken offer, the reason for this late-night meeting in his private residence, suddenly slammed into her with brutal clarity.

A wave of heat, of profound humiliation, washed over her.

But her father's life, his freedom, was at stake.

She swallowed, her throat tight.

Her fingers, trembling, went to the top button of her silk blouse.

Ethan watched her, his expression still unreadable, a mask of cool control.

Then, he turned away slightly, placing the file summary back onto his desk.

Sarah misinterpreted the movement. Rejection? Anger?

Panic surged. She couldn't fail.

Hastily, she unbuttoned her blouse, her fingers fumbling.

She shrugged off her jacket, then let the blouse fall from her shoulders, leaving her in a thin camisole.

"Mr. Hayes!" she cried, tears stinging her eyes.

Impulsively, she stepped towards him, her hand reaching out, touching his arm.

"My father's life... please."

That's everything available right now.
