Chapter 3 THE AWAKENING STORM

Chapter 3:

Lena barely had time to react before the sky above Avalthar cracked open like shattered glass. A deep, guttural rumble echoed across the floating city, and from the abyss, two enormous glowing amber eyes peered down.

A sharp gust of wind swept through the landscape, carrying whispers in an ancient tongue. The feline creature beside Lena let out a low, warning growl, its fur bristling with energy. The Forgotten King was waking.

Elyndra's grip on Lena's hand tightened. "We must move. Now."

She turned swiftly, her cloak billowing behind her as she led Lena down a narrow, winding path through the glowing forest. Trees with sapphire leaves pulsed softly, reacting to the disturbance in the air.

"Where are we going?" Lena demanded, breathless as she struggled to keep up.

"The Celestial Gate," Elyndra replied. "If the Forgotten King fully awakens, both our worlds will be consumed by his hunger. The locket is the only thing keeping the Veil from collapsing completely."

Lena instinctively glanced at the silver locket hanging around her neck. Its glow had grown stronger, flickering like a heartbeat.

Suddenly, a deafening roar tore through the realm.

The ground trembled. Trees bent under the force of unseen energy. And then-they came.

From the shadows of the forest, figures emerged. Cloaked beings with hollow, glowing eyes. Their bodies were wrapped in dark mist, and the air around them warped unnaturally, as if they didn't fully belong in this realm.

"Shadowborn," Elyndra hissed. "Servants of the Forgotten King."

The Shadowborn moved without sound, gliding across the ground like wraiths. One raised a skeletal hand, and a dark spear materialized in the air, shooting toward Lena.

Elyndra reacted instantly. She raised her own hand, tracing a glowing rune in the air, and a shimmering shield of blue light deflected the spear. The force of the impact sent a shockwave through the forest.

"Run!" Elyndra ordered.

Lena turned and sprinted, her heart pounding in her chest. The feline creature dashed alongside her, its silver fur glowing as it snarled at their pursuers.

But the Shadowborn were fast. Too fast.

They closed the distance in seconds, moving like wraiths through the mist, their whispers slithering into Lena's mind.

"Give us the locket. Give us the locket. Give us the locket."

Lena gritted her teeth, forcing the voices away. She didn't know how or why, but something inside her resisted them.

Then-just as a Shadowborn reached out to grab her-a new presence erupted into the battle.

A blinding golden arrow streaked through the air, striking one of the Shadowborn in the chest. The creature let out a shriek, disintegrating into black mist.

Lena skidded to a stop, eyes wide.

From the darkness, a warrior emerged.

Clad in intricate golden armor with swirling celestial patterns, the newcomer moved with graceful precision. A longbow of pure starlight rested in his hands, another glowing arrow already nocked.

"Get down!" he commanded.

Lena instinctively obeyed.

The warrior released the arrow, and a pulse of light exploded through the battlefield. The remaining Shadowborn screeched in agony before dissolving into nothingness.

Silence followed.

Lena slowly lifted her head, her breath ragged.

The warrior stepped forward, lowering his bow. His piercing silver eyes locked onto her.

"You're the one who awakened the Locket of Blackthorn," he said. It wasn't a question.

Lena hesitated. "Who... who are you?"

The warrior's expression was unreadable. "I am Kaelen, Guardian of the Celestial Gate. And if we don't move now, you may be the last hope we have against the Forgotten King."

Lena swallowed hard, her fingers tightening around the locket.

She had come to Eldermere for a simple historical investigation.

Now, she was part of something much, much bigger.

And she wasn't sure if she was ready for what was coming next.
