Chapter 3 Glimpses behind the mask
The days began to blend, each one a delicate dance of cleaning, observing, and, above all, avoiding trouble. Every staff member was precise and silent as if the Stormborn mansion demanded nothing less. But as I settled into the rhythm of this place, I started noticing small, barely noticeable details about Zane and his world. I would see him in passing, his figure unmistakable even at a distance. He moved with a quiet intensity, a natural confidence that kept everyone around him on edge. But as terrifying as he seemed, something about him drew me in, like a mystery waiting to be unraveled. One night, I found myself alone in the library, dusting the shelves, when I heard the familiar heavy footsteps outside the door. I froze, hoping I'd go unnoticed, but as he entered, I felt his gaze settle on me. "You're still here?" he asked, his voice as calm and smooth as always, yet laced with curiosity. I swallowed, clutching my cleaning rag as if it could protect me. "I was just...finishing up, Mr. Stormborn." He looked around, his expression unreadable. "The library is my sanctuary. Few people step inside without permission." I felt a jolt of fear, but his tone softened, surprising me. "Tell me, Bella," he said, almost musing to himself, "what do you think of this place?" I hesitated, feeling the weight of his gaze. "It's...impressive," I managed, careful with my words. "But it also feels...empty." His eyebrows raised slightly as if I'd said something unexpected. For a moment, he seemed almost thoughtful, as though he hadn't considered that perspective before. "Interesting," he murmured. Before I could stop myself, I blurted out a question. "Why did you bring me here?" I asked, a surge of bravery mixed with my fear. The question hung in the air, and I instantly regretted it, feeling my cheeks burn. But to my surprise, he didn't dismiss me. Instead, he studied me, his gaze intense, as if he were assessing my very soul. "Let's just say I see potential where others see...a means to an end," he replied, his voice low. It was as if he were speaking to himself more than to me, and it left me with more questions than answers. Then, as quickly as he had entered, he left, leaving me standing there with a pounding heart and a million thoughts. I wondered what he had meant, what he saw in me that no one else did. And as much as I wanted to ignore it, a strange thrill sparked within an undeniable curiosity that seemed impossible to shake.
