Chapter 1
My family is under a strange curse. Regardless of gender, we are all nearly infertile.
Because of this, the first child born to any generation is immediately groomed as the sole heir. They are destined to take the helm of a multi-trillion dollar empire.
In my generation, I was the first to successfully conceive.
The day my pregnancy was confirmed, I rushed home, my heart racing with joy. I couldn't wait to tell my husband the news in person.
Now that I was carrying the heir, I could finally take him to meet my family. The financial crisis his business was facing would vanish in an instant because of this baby.
But when I walked through the door, another woman was already there.
Dustin York looked at me with chilling indifference. "Susannah is back from overseas," he said.
"So, let's get a divorce."
I subconsciously stroked my belly. It seemed Dustin wasn't destined to be a father, nor was he meant to use this child to expand his business empire.
Fine. If he wanted to leave, I would keep the baby and lose the father.
...
Susannah Ward was Dustin's childhood sweetheart.
Eight years ago, she moved abroad, leaving Dustin absolutely devastated.
My best friend, who also happened to be Dustin's sister, Bianca, set us up. I didn't find out about his soul-crushing past until after our wedding.
Everyone has a past, so I didn't hold it against him. I never imagined he was still obsessed with Susannah.
The moment she stepped foot back in the country, he wanted to throw me away.
I looked at the lavish spread on the dining table. The food looked and smelled incredible.
Dustin hadn't even taken off his apron yet.
In the eight years I'd known him and the six years we'd been married, I never knew he could cook.
I sat down and asked, "Is this the Last Supper?"
"I'm sorry." Dustin untied his apron. "This is a welcome-home feast for Susannah. She doesn't like to share. I promised her that my cooking is for her eyes only."
He walked over and picked up a set of divorce papers he had clearly prepared in advance.
"If you agree, sign them and move out immediately."
He couldn't wait to get rid of me.
I picked up the papers, my brows furrowing as I read the terms.
It was written in plain English: I was to leave with absolutely nothing.
I didn't say a word. I just picked up the pen.
Divorce happens, and I could accept that. But Dustin was being unnecessarily cruel. If he had offered a fair split of the assets, I might have stayed quiet.
Now, I would have to take back everything that belonged to me in my own way.
After signing, I slid off my wedding ring and stood up to leave.
Susannah's voice rang out, cold and sharp. "Wait a minute."
"Open your bag. I want to see what's inside."
I turned to Dustin. "Are you really going to let her search me?"
"Susannah is the mistress of this house now," he replied. "Do as she says."
