Cold rain lashed violently against the double-paned glass entrance of the East Side Private Emergency Center. Gracie stepped out of the yellow cab into the freezing drizzle. Her face was chalk-white, her lips bitten raw. She used her left shoulder to push through the heavy revolving door, clutching her right arm against her ribs. The sterile smell of rubbing alcohol and antiseptic washed over her. At the central triage desk, Clara Sullivan, the senior charge nurse on duty, took one glance at Gracie's exposed, blistered arm and gasped, bolting from behind the counter. "Dear God in heaven! That is a severe deep second-degree thermal burn!" Clara wheeled a trauma chair forward immediately, her voice urgent. "You are in danger of systemic shock! Sit down, honey, right now!" Gracie shook her head gently. Her voice was thin, but steady as stone. "I can walk. Please, just debride the wound and dress it. Thank you." Minutes later, the stark white overhead surgical lamp in the trauma room flared to life. The harsh halogen glare illuminated Gracie's entire right forearm. The epidermis had completely peeled back across a wide stretch of skin, and dense clusters of dark purple blood blisters glistened under the light. Clara snapped on sterile nitrile gloves and picked up curved surgical shears. With practiced care, she began cutting away the remnants of the black cashmere sleeve that had melted into the weeping tissue. "This is going to hurt like hell," Clara warned softly. "If the pain becomes unbearable, scream. Do not hold it in." The cold metal blades clipped through the charred wool fibers directly against raw flesh. Gracie clenched her teeth so hard that the metallic taste of blood filled her mouth. Her spine stayed as straight as an iron rod, her knuckles turning white against the edge of the examination table. Through the entire agonizing ordeal, she did not let out a single whimper. The nurse flushed the exposed dermis with chilled sterile saline. The freezing liquid tore through the exposed nerve endings like jagged glass. Heavy beads of cold sweat rolled down Gracie's forehead, soaking into the paper sheet beneath her, but her amber eyes remained fixed on the plain white wall ahead. Outside the frosted glass partition, hurried footsteps echoed down the polished corridor, accompanied by the overly deferential greeting of a hospital administrator. "Mr. Hamilton, the Chief of Micro-Hand Surgery is already scrubbing in at VIP Suite A. Please bring Miss Mullins this way." Gracie's long eyelashes fluttered slightly, but she did not turn her head by a fraction of an inch. In the hallway, Chas walked past, his broad arm wrapped protectively around Anabella's slender shoulders. Anabella was holding a small ice pack wrapped in a plush dry towel against her index finger, leaning her entire body weight against Chas's ribs as if she were on the verge of collapsing. "Chas, my finger feels so numb..." Anabella sobbed loudly enough for the entire wing to hear. "Will I ever be able to play the harp again? My hands are my life!" Chas's jaw remained tightly clenched, his baritone voice carrying a rare, public tenderness. "The finest micro-hand surgeon in New York is right upstairs. Even if there is only a faint speck of redness, I will make sure not a single trace is left behind. I promised you that." As they passed the clear section of the trauma room partition, Chas glanced sideways out of habit. His footsteps halted instantly. Under the blinding surgical lamp, Clara was using sterile gauze to clean the ruptured blood blisters across Gracie's arm. Dark crimson fluid was dripping steadily into a stainless-steel kidney dish with quiet, rhythmic clicks. Clara shook her head in visible outrage, her voice filtering through the half-open door. "This kind of deep tissue destruction was never caused by an accidental splash. This looks like deliberate, vicious domestic violence. Honey, do you want me to call the NYPD Special Victims Division right now?" Gracie's reply came out dry, detached, and chillingly flat. "No, nurse. It was just an operational loss during a service contract. It will all be over very soon." Standing outside the glass, Chas felt as though a thunderbolt had ripped through his chest. His boots froze against the floor tiles. His gray pupils contracted violently, and an acute, nauseating cramp seized the pit of his stomach. Through the glass, the horrific reality of Gracie's injury was laid bare before his eyes. Beside him, Anabella was whimpering over a finger that barely showed a flush of pink. But inside the room, Gracie's arm looked as if it had been thrust straight into an open furnace. The charred wool had fused with torn, bleeding flesh. Anabella sensed Chas freezing in place. Following his gaze toward the trauma room, a flicker of sheer panic flashed across her pale blue eyes. She immediately threw more of her weight against his ribs, amplifying her desperate cries. "Chas... I feel so dizzy. The hallway is spinning..." This time, however, Chas did not immediately wrap her in his arms. His large hand pulled away from Anabella's waist. He shoved open the sliding glass door of the trauma room with such force that the metal track rattled violently against the wall. "Gracie." Chas stepped into the room, the sharp clack of his dress shoes shattering the clinical silence. A tremor ran through his voice that he could not suppress. Clara instantly stepped in front of the examination table, glaring at the tall intruder. "Sir! This is an active sterile procedure area! Unauthorized personnel must step outside immediately!" Chas ignored the nurse entirely. His dark gray eyes were glued to the thick layer of burn ointment and blood-soaked gauze being wrapped around Gracie's arm. The dark red fluid seeping through the white cotton made his throat constrict with suffocating guilt. "Your injury..." Chas choked on his words, his fists clenching at his sides. "Why is it this severe?" Gracie did not even lift her eyelids. She let the nurse secure the elastic bandage around her limb in absolute silence, treating Chas as though he were nothing more than empty air. Anabella hurried in on Chas's heels, leaning against the doorframe in a display of fragile distress, clutching her towel. "Oh heavens, Gracie! How did you get hurt so badly?" Anabella cried, tears streaming down her cheeks with theatrical perfection. "Why didn't you say anything back in the lounge? Chas, it's all my fault... if you hadn't moved to shield me, Gracie wouldn't have been caught in the spill..." Anabella reached out to clutch Chas's wool overcoat, subtly digging her fingernails into the fabric. Gracie finally turned her head. Her amber eyes cut across Anabella's tearful face like polished shards of ice before slowly shifting toward Chas. "Mr. Hamilton," Gracie spoke, her voice laced with deadly, mocking precision. "If you don't escort Miss Mullins up to the VIP suite right away, the redness on her finger might disappear on its own." The words struck Chas like a physical blow across the face. The color drained from his sharp features. His throat worked convulsively, as if he had swallowed a mouthful of broken glass, unable to utter a single word of defense. Clara secured the final clip on the bandage and handed Gracie a printed prescription slip with a cold glare toward the couple. "Change the dressing every twenty-four hours. Keep it completely dry. If the deep dermis becomes infected, you will be looking at extensive skin grafts." "Thank you, nurse." Gracie took the paper with her left hand, bowed politely to Clara, and stood up from the table. Without sparing a single glance at the brooding billionaire standing before her, she walked straight toward the exit. As she stepped past him, Chas's large hand shot out like an iron clamp, locking brutally onto her uninjured left shoulder. "Stop right there," Chas growled, his voice thick with raw panic and wounded pride. "Did I give you permission to leave?"
