Chapter 1

It was the sixth year of my mission to win Jace over. Now, he wanted a divorce. He wanted to spend the final months of his first love's life by her side.

I told him I wouldn't agree to it. I warned him that if we signed those papers, I would lose every single memory of him.

Jace didn't believe me. He shoved the divorce settlement into my hands with a look of pure disgust.

"She's dying, for God's sake. Can you stop being so selfish and lying through your teeth?" he snapped.

Later, it turned out his precious Elena had been misdiagnosed. But by the time he realized his mistake, I couldn't even remember his name.

Prologue Chapter 1

On our wedding anniversary, my husband gave me the ultimate gift. He asked for a divorce.

"When you have a minute, let's just get this over with," he said coldly.

"Elena has stage four stomach cancer. She doesn't have much time left, and I need to be with her."

I looked at the table I had spent hours setting. The food was cold, and the candlelight I had prepared for our romantic dinner felt like a cruel joke.

Deep down, I had known this day was coming. His heart had been drifting away from me for months.

Ever since Elena, his high school sweetheart, moved back to the city, he started staying out late. He went on more "business trips" than ever before.

We barely spoke anymore. At first, I tried to fix things by bringing up topics he used to love.

He would always cut me off. He told me I was annoying and that he didn't want to hear it.

I had put so much effort into tonight. I just wanted him to be happy for once.

But he hadn't even touched his chair. He walked through the door and immediately demanded a split.

I knew the truth. His heart wasn't mine anymore.

I clenched my fists and took a few deep breaths. It was the only way I could keep my voice steady.

"Jace, if we divorce, I will forget you," I said.

That was the rule the System gave me at the very beginning. It was a core setting that no one could change.

His expression shifted instantly. He looked at me with an icy glare.

"Jade, enough is enough," he growled.

"Why do you always treat me like I'm an idiot? You'll lose your memory? Why don't you just say you'll die if we break up?"

I opened my mouth to respond, but he closed his eyes, looking exhausted.

"I've had enough of this. I don't want to spend another second with a woman I have no feelings for."

We had been married for years, and he was telling me he felt nothing? My heart shattered.

"If you didn't love me, why did you marry me in the first place?" I asked.

He looked up, and for a second, I saw a flicker of panic in his eyes. Before he could answer, his phone buzzed. It was Elena.

His gaze softened instantly. He stepped aside to whisper comforting words into the phone. A moment later, he grabbed his coat to leave.

"Today is our anniversary. Where are you going?" I demanded.

I stepped in front of the door, refusing to let him pass. He tried to shove me aside, but I didn't budge.

The sound of the slap was sharp and loud. He had hit me in a fit of rage.

"You heard the call, didn't you? Stop being such a hypocrite. Elena isn't feeling well, and I have to be there."

"Move out of my way. Now."

Jace looked at me like I was his worst enemy. When I still didn't move, he grabbed a steak knife from the table and held it to his own throat.

"Jade, I swear, if you stop me again, I'll end it right here in front of you."

Looking at his desperate, violent state, I felt a wave of total exhaustion. I couldn't stand the thought of him getting hurt.

I stepped aside and let him walk out the door.
