Chapter 3 The Return of William Brickson
Julia sat in front of the mirror, staring at her reflection. She couldn't believe it had been three days since she'd woken up in this new body. Two months since she died and woke up in this body, she had decided to leave her past life behind, God gave her a second chance for a reason and she's not planning on wasting it.
Her mother, Sharon, burst into the room, a flurry of excitement. "Julia, darling! William is arriving today! Your father and I want you to make a good impression."
Julia nodded, still trying to wrap her head around the idea of being engaged to someone she'd never met.
As she descended the stairs, Julia saw Sofia lingering in the foyer, her eyes fixed on Julia with a mixture of disdain and jealousy.
"Good morning, Julia," Sofia said sweetly. "I hope you're ready for William's arrival. He's very particular about things."
Julia ignored Sofia's jab and greeted her father, James, who was pacing in the living room.
"Julia, William will be here any minute," James said, his voice firm but nervous. "Remember, he's my son-in-law to be so please, treat him with respect."
Just then, the doorbell rang. Julia's heart skipped a beat as she followed her parents to the entrance.
When the door opened, Julia saw him - William Brickson. Tall, dark, and handsome, with piercing brown eyes that seemed to see right through her.
"Welcome, William," James said, extending his hand.
William smiled, his eyes locking onto Julia's. "It's uncle and aunty, and also pleasure to finally meet you, Julia."
As they shook hands, Julia felt a spark of electricity run through her body. She couldn't deny the attraction, but something about William's gaze made her feel uneasy, like he could see her secrets.
As William's eyes held Julia's, she felt like he could see right through her, to the secrets she kept hidden. She quickly looked away, trying to compose herself.
"Please, come in," Sharon said, breaking the silence. "We've prepared lunch for you."
As they walked to the dining room, Julia couldn't help but notice the way William moved with confidence and poise. She felt a pang of intimidation, wondering how she could ever measure up to his expectations, but she remembered she's no longer Victoria, she's Julia Nelson now, her father is rich and wealthy, she's not supposed to bow her head for anyone anymore.
The lunch was a blur of polite conversation and forced laughter. Julia composed herself to keep up, so she won't feel like an outsider in her own family.
As they finished dessert, William turned to Julia and said, "I'd love to take a walk with you in the garden. Get to know you better."
Julia hesitated, feeling a sense of unease. But one thing she learnt in her past life is always make sure they don't predict your emotions, so she smiled and looked at her parents, her parents encouraged her, so she agreed.
As they strolled through the garden, William asked her questions about her interests and hobbies. Julia found herself opening up to him, despite her initial reservations.
But when he asked her about her past, Julia's instincts kicked in. She quickly changed the subject, feeling like she was walking on thin ice.
William's eyes narrowed slightly, and Julia wondered if he suspected something. But he smiled and let the subject drop.
As they returned to the house, Sofia was waiting in the foyer, a sly grin spreading across her face.
"William, I'm so glad you're back," Sofia said, her voice dripping with sweetness. "I've missed you."
William's expression turned cold, and he she asked Sofia.
"What do you mean you've missed me Sofia" I don't think we're well acquainted
Julia smiled inwardly, but did not utter any word and turned to face Sofia.
Sofia's smile faltered as William's expression turned icy. "What is it, Sofia?" he asked curtly, his voice dripping with disdain.
Sofia's eyes flashed with anger, but she quickly masked it with a sweet smile. "I just wanted to welcome you back, William. I've missed you."
William raised an eyebrow. "I doubt that."
Sofia's face fell, but she tried again. "I was thinking we could catch up, maybe go out for dinner?"
William's laugh was cold and mirthless. "I don't think so, Sofia. I have more important things to attend to."
Sofia's eyes narrowed, her voice dropping to a whisper. "You're still angry with me, aren't you? About what happened in Uni?"
William's expression turned glacial. "I don't have time for your games, Sofia. Leave me alone."
As Sofia slunk away, defeated, William's eyes flicked to Julia, who was watching the exchange with interest. He strode over to her, his movements fluid and powerful.
"Let's get one thing straight, Julia," William said, his voice low and commanding. "I don't tolerate games or manipulation. If you want to be with me, you'll have to belong to only me, I don't share my things with anybody, if you know you're interested in this relationship and marriage then make sure your serious about it, and if your not interested or maybe you have someone you love, I suggest we tell the parents and end it all, I don't have time for games".
Julia felt a shiver run down her spine as William's eyes seemed to bore into her soul. She nodded, feeling a sense of trepidation.
"Good," William said, his expression softening slightly. "I'm glad we understand each other."
But as he turned to hug her, Julia couldn't shake the feeling that she was in over her head. William was not a man to be trifled with, and she wondered if she'd made a terrible mistake.
Julia's anger simmered just below the surface as she pulled away from William's embrace. "William, we need to talk," she said, her voice firm.
"What's wrong, Julia?" William asked, his eyes narrowing.
"Your possessiveness, your controlling behavior... it's suffocating me," Julia said, her words spilling out in a rush. "I need space to breathe, to be myself."
William's expression softened, and he nodded. "I'm sorry, Julia. I didn't realize I was making you feel that way. I just want to protect you."
"I know, but there's a fine line between protection and control," Julia said, her voice gentle but firm. "Can you try to give me more space? Trust me to make my own decisions?"
William nodded, his eyes locked on hers. "I'll try, Julia. I promise."
As they hugged, Julia felt a weight lift off her shoulders. Maybe, just maybe, they could make this work.
But across town, Sofia's jealousy seethed like a festering wound. She couldn't bear the thought of William and Julia together, happy and in love.
Sofia's eyes narrowed as she plotted her next move. She would find a way to drive a wedge between them, to break their relationship apart.
And so, Sofia began to weave a web of deceit and manipulation, determined to destroy William and Julia's love.
Julia's first day at the office was daunting. As she walked in, she could feel the weight of curious gazes upon her. The office was predominantly male and a fewer females, and Julia could sense their skepticism.
"Great, another girl," one of them whispered, loud enough for Julia to hear. "I heard she's the boss new secretary, wonder how long she'll last."
Julia's confidence wavered, but she stood tall, determined to prove them wrong. She was introduced to the team, and as she shook hands, she felt a subtle resistance, as if they were testing her resolve.
Throughout the day, Julia encountered subtle hints of sexism - whispers, condescending smiles, and patronizing comments. But she refused to let it get to her.
At lunch, Alex, her colleague, approached her. "Hey, Julia, don't mind them. They're just old-school. You'll prove yourself in no time."
Julia smiled, grateful for the support. "Thanks, Alex. I intend to."
As the day went on, Julia impressed her colleagues with her sharp insights and quick thinking. By the end of the day, the whispers had turned to murmurs of approval.
William, who had been watching from afar, smiled to himself. Julia was going to do just fine.
