Chapter 3

Chapter 3

After soothing Rosie to sleep, Devon drove back to the office, looking drained and hollow.

The coffee on his desk had gone ice-cold hours ago.

He pinched the bridge of his nose and yelled toward the outer office.

"Willa, get in here and get me fresh coffee!"

Silence answered him. My dedicated desk stood completely empty, looking as if nobody had sat there in days.

Devon waited a moment, let out an irritated click of his tongue, and then froze as a sudden thought crossed his mind.

A tiny spark of hope flickered in my ghost heart.

Was he finally realizing that something was terribly wrong with me on that road?

But he did not. Instead, he walked straight to his chair, sat down, and opened today's contract folders.

Piles of documents cluttered his desk. In the past, I would have already stepped in to help him sort through everything.

He took a deep breath, absentmindedly took a sip of the spoiled coffee, and spat it out with a violent gag.

Dark drops splattered across the mahogany desk. He grabbed some tissues, wiped the mess furiously, and cursed under his breath.

"Playing dead when you know damn well how busy we are... I really spoiled you rotten!"

After finishing the urgent files, his assistant walked in to collect them, hesitating as she checked the signatures.

"Mr. Miller... you signed the wrong name."

Devon paused, grabbing the papers back to look.

Every single document was signed with my name: Willa Scott.

"Just file them under her name," he muttered.

"But Ms. Scott does not have executive authority anymore. These signatures are legally invalid..."

Devon had forgotten that he had systematically stripped away all my power. On paper, I was still the managing director, but in reality, I was nothing more than his personal secretary handling chores.

Devon fell silent. With a cold face, he waved his hand, ordering the assistant to reprint everything.

Losing all motivation to work, he sat blankly in his leather chair, staring into empty space.

After what felt like hours, a soft knock came from the door, followed by a sweet voice.

"Devon, I was too scared to stay home alone, so I came to see you."

Snapping out of his daze, Devon rushed over and pulled the door open for Rosie.

Rosie looked exhausted, rubbing her sleepy eyes and holding her arms out for a hug.

Devon immediately scooped her into his arms and held her tight.

"What happened?"

Rosie nestled against his shoulder, her voice trembling with sorrow.

"I had a terrible nightmare. I dreamed you married Willa, and when I tried to come see you, security kicked me out."

"Even you yelled at me, telling me never to show my face again."

"When I woke up and saw you were not there, I was terrified it was all real."

Devon held her tighter, as if protecting his most precious treasure, his voice dripping with tenderness.

"How could that happen? Dreams are not real, silly."

Rosie lifted her tear-filled eyes, gazing into his.

"So you will not marry Willa?"

"Never. She ruined your life. All I want is for her to suffer for the rest of hers!"

When he mentioned my name, Devon ground his teeth with such venom, as if I were his sworn enemy.

Hearing his vow, Rosie lowered her head. A smug, victorious smirk tugged at the corners of her lips.

"As long as I have your word, that is enough."

"Go ahead and finish your work. I will just sit right here quietly and keep you company."

That's everything available right now.
