Chapter 2

Nina stumbled in, reeking of booze, and called my name.

When she opened the bedroom door and saw me lying in bed, she froze.

"Why didn't you make me my hangover cure?"

I kept my eyes closed, saying nothing.

She nudged my arm, her voice a whiny purr. "Come on, Zayne. I want my hangover cure."

I forced my eyes open, my voice flat. "The recipe is on the kitchen counter."

"You're not going to make it for me?" She frowned. "I was just a little late. Why didn't you wait up?"

I stared at her, my face a blank mask. "I'm tired. I'm going to sleep. If you don't want to make it, there are hangover pills in the medicine cabinet."

Ever since Nina started getting famous, she had parties to go to almost every night.

To help her feel better the next day, I had spent hours researching hangover remedies.

I tried over a dozen different recipes for the cure, testing each one on myself after a night of drinking until I found the perfect one.

Every time she came home drunk, I would have it ready for her, and then I'd massage her temples.

All so she wouldn't feel so miserable in the morning.

I had done this for five years.

But now, I was tired. I didn't want to take care of her anymore.

My coldness seemed to catch Nina off guard.

Just like her actions today had caught me off guard.

We had a secret marriage.

Nina had said that once she made a name for herself in the industry, we would go public.

That was eight years ago.

Three years into her career, she started to get noticed. But she always said it wasn't the right time. She wanted to be the best in the business. She begged me to wait a little longer.

Last year, she swept every major award, officially becoming number one.

While she was writing this new song, I overheard her in meetings, discussing the production and the title.

I kept hearing the names "Jiang" and "Faye."

I was so happy. I thought she was writing a song for us.
