Chapter 1 The Quiet Confession
Maya's Pov
I had been in love with Alex Jameson for almost a year and no one knew except Naomi.
It started the way these things always do in a city like this. Small moments that should have meant nothing. The way his eyes found mine across a crowded charity gala and held a second too long. The low "good evening, Maya" that somehow felt warmer than anyone else's. The rare times he came into the gallery where I worked and asked quiet, thoughtful questions about the pieces instead of treating them like background noise.
I never let myself hope. Men like Alex Jameson didn't notice girls who still blushed when their names were spoken. He was thirty-two, already a name that opened every door in the city, always composed, always a little distant. I was twenty-five, soft-spoken, the girl who still wore cardigans to work and kept her hair in a neat twist.
So I kept the feeling locked away. I told myself it was only admiration. The sharp cut of his jaw. The calm authority in his voice. The way people moved aside for him without him ever raising a hand.
Naomi never bought it.
We were sitting on my tiny balcony that evening, city lights blinking below us, two glasses of cheap wine between us. I had just finished telling her about the way Alex looked at me that afternoon when I delivered the portfolio to his office. How his fingers brushed mine when he took the folder. How he said my name like he already knew the shape of it in his mouth.
Naomi watched me over the rim of her glass, eyes soft but sharp the way only a best friend can be.
"You light up every time you talk about him," she said. "And you've been doing it for months. Don't pretend this is just about his face or his money."
I looked away. "It could be. I don't know him. Well...Not really."
"Exactly." She reached over and squeezed my knee. "So take it slow. Find out if you like the man or the idea of him. Don't hand him your whole heart on the first night just because he finally looked at you the way you've always wanted."
I nodded, even though my pulse was still racing from the memory of his hand at my chin and the quiet way he asked me to dinner.
"Wear something nice," Naomi added with a small smile. "But keep your head. Text me when you get home so I know you're safe."
I promised her I would.
At eight the black car arrived downstairs. I wore a simple black dress that hugged my waist and fell soft around my thighs. Nothing flashy. Just enough to feel pretty. My hair was down for once, dark waves brushing my shoulders. I kept telling myself I would stay careful. I would listen more than I spoke. I would leave if anything felt wrong.
Alex was waiting in the private dining room of a restaurant so exclusive I had only ever read about it. The moment the door closed behind me his eyes moved over my face, my hair, the dress, and something warm and hungry settled in his expression.
"You came," he said, voice low.
"I said I would."
He pulled out my chair himself. When I sat, his hand rested for a brief second on the back of my neck, thumb brushing the soft skin just below my hairline. The touch was light. It still made my breath catch.
We talked. He asked about the gallery, about the artists I liked, about the quiet parts of the city I preferred. He listened like every word mattered. I found myself answering more honestly than I planned. Every so often his gaze dropped to my mouth and lingered, and heat curled low in my stomach.
Halfway through the main course he set his fork down and looked at me fully.
"I've wanted to ask you out for months," he said simply. "I kept telling myself the timing was wrong. Tonight I decided I was done waiting."
The honesty in his voice made my chest tighten.
"I noticed you too," I admitted, softer than I meant to. "I just never thought..."
"That I was looking back?" His mouth curved. "I was. Every time."
The air between us changed. It became heavier, warmer. When dessert arrived he barely glanced at it. His eyes stayed on me.
"Come home with me," he said. It wasn't a demand. It was an invitation edged with quiet certainty. "No pressure. Just more time. I want to keep talking to you without a room full of other people."
Naomi's voice echoed in my head. Take it slow. Find out if the feelings are real.
I still heard myself say yes.
His apartment was high above the city, all glass and soft light and quiet luxury. He poured two glasses of wine and handed me one. When our fingers touched again the contact lasted longer. His free hand rose and brushed a strand of hair behind my ear, then settled gently at the side of my neck. His thumb stroked once over my pulse.
"You're nervous," he murmured.
"A little."
"Good." He stepped closer until the heat of his body reached me. "I like knowing I affect you the same way you affect me."
I tilted my face up. He leaned down slowly, giving me every chance to turn away but I didn't. His mouth met mine in a kiss that started soft and careful, then deepened the moment I made a small sound against his lips. His hand slid into my hair while the other rested at my waist and drew me closer.
When he finally lifted his head my breathing was unsteady.
"Stay," he said against my temple. "Just for a while. Let me take care of you tonight."
I thought of Naomi's advice. I thought of the year I had spent wanting this exact moment.
I stayed.
His fingers traced the line of my jaw, then lower, along the side of my throat. The touch was gentle, almost reverent, yet it carried the promise of everything he had been holding back.
"Tell me if you want me to stop," he whispered.
I shook my head.
Alex smiled against my skin, soft and dark at the same time, and the night began to change around us.
