Chapter 2
2
Harry, who had been standing there like a statue, finally moved. He pulled Sadie behind him.
"Shut up! She shouldn't know about that. What if she ruins things? You idiot!"
Hearing him call his own sister an idiot almost made me want to clap for him.
He had let her run wild for years. It seemed he was finally realizing how loud her mouth was.
But Sadie didn't listen. She shoved his hand away.
"What are you afraid of? So what if she knows? The Sterling heiress is head over heels for you."
"If this loser tries to cause trouble, that family can crush her with a single finger!"
She looked at me with pure arrogance. "Get lost. Once my brother marries into the Sterling family, your little deals won't mean a thing."
From their conversation, I figured it out. He had met another woman behind my back.
But there weren't that many billionaire heiresses in this city. Could he be getting scammed?
Well, you can't save someone who's determined to jump off a cliff.
Right there in front of them, I pulled out my phone and called my top clients.
I told them the collaboration was canceled. I added that it wasn't just this once―we would never work together again.
The clients on the other end were furious, slamming their phones down.
Harry didn't seem to care yet. As I turned to leave, he threw one last threat my way.
"I was just having fun with you all these years. Don't take it seriously."
"Don't try any tricks to harass me, or I'll make sure you regret ever being born!"
I let out a cold laugh with my back turned to him and pressed the elevator button.
As the doors opened, I heard the CFO rushing toward him. "Mr. Pierce! When are we paying the office rent? The landlord has called ten times!"
The project manager ran over too. "Mr. Pierce! It's a disaster! Mr. Thompson is canceling his orders and demanding a huge refund!"
Sadie's shrill voice rang out. "What's the rush? My brother is going to be the Sterling son-in-law! We aren't short on change!"
As the elevator doors closed, I heard Harry's voice sounding increasingly frantic on the phone.
I walked out of the building feeling satisfied.
Then, I made one more call.
"Uncle Frank? That office building with the tenant who can't pay rent? Evict them immediately."
The next day, Harry cornered me at the gym I usually went to.
Seeing that I wasn't heartbroken or crying seemed to make him even angrier. His face twisted.
"Wow, you really can't live without a man, can you? You lost your meal ticket with me, so you came to the gym to find a new one?"
I glanced at him and said sharply, "Speak your piece or get out of my way!"
He turned bright red with rage, stuttering for a moment before getting to the point.
"You don't work for me anymore! What right do you have to tell those clients not to work with me?"
I laughed, looking innocent. "Like you said, I'm not your employee. Those clients like me. They listen to me. What does that have to do with you?"
"Aren't you about to become a billionaire's son-in-law? If you're short on cash, go ask your precious heiress."
Seeing that his intimidation wasn't working, he turned to leave in a huff.
Before he left, he threw one more aggressive line at me. "You better stay out of my sight forever!"
I watched him walk away and my smile faded.
After so many years, it was impossible not to feel a little hurt, but mostly, I was just curious.
Are there really that many billionaire families in this city? As far as I knew, I was the only Sterling heiress.
Stealing my boyfriend was one thing, but stealing my identity? That was a hard no.
I really wanted to see who this mysterious "heiress" was.
