Chapter 1

1

It was our fourth wedding anniversary.

My husband Lucas Lexton's young secretary posted a photo of the two of them on social media.

The caption read: "I hope to spend the rest of my life with you."

I hit the like button. Within seconds, she deleted the post.

A minute later, my phone rang.

It was Lucas. I could hear him comforting the sobbing secretary on the other end.

He started screaming at me, calling me narrow-minded and accusing me of making a scene over nothing.

After he hung up, they both changed their profile pictures on Facebook and Instagram.

The new photos were the same sweet picture of them together.

If this were the old me, I would have rushed to his office and caused a scandal until they took the photos down.

But this time, I was just too tired to care.

For the first time in years, I didn't shed a single tear.

I calmly started packing my bags. I realized there wasn't much of mine in this house.

Even my clothes were just the same few basic pieces I wore every day.

It was almost funny. Lucas was the CEO of a Fortune 500 company.

As his wife, I lived worse than a hired maid.

Lucas was a typical controlling alpha male.

He forced me to quit my management job to stay home and do housework.

I had to wake up early every day to cook his breakfast according to his schedule.

Sometimes he would come home at 2 AM after drinking and wake me up just to make him soup.

I used to love him so much that I thought my sacrifices would make him love me back.

Now, I realized how wrong I was.

I sat in the living room with my suitcase, staring at our wedding photo.

Today was supposed to be our special day.

Instead, Lucas was being intimate with his assistant, Chloe Cross, letting her claim him publicly.

I finished my last call with my lawyer and stood up to leave.

Just then, the door opened. Lucas walked in smelling like booze, with a lipstick stain on his collar.

I knew Chloe had left it there on purpose to get a reaction out of me.

I can't lie and say it didn't hurt. We dated for five years and were married for four.

Nine years of history isn't something you can just throw away in a second.

Lucas kicked off his shoes and flopped onto the sofa next to me.

He didn't even notice the suitcase standing by the door.

The scent of another woman's perfume on him made me feel physically sick.

"Babe, my head hurts from the drinks. Can you make me some lemon water?" he groaned.

In the past, I would have had it ready before he even stepped through the door.

Minutes passed, but I didn't move an inch.

He patted my thigh and reached for my hand.

"Are you still mad about the phone call? Look, I'm sorry. I already changed the profile pictures back."

"You know how busy I am at work. Sometimes I lose my temper. Don't be so sensitive."

His half-hearted explanation made my heart sink even further.

"Chloe posted that photo for everyone to see. Do you have any respect for me as your wife?" I asked quietly.

As soon as I mentioned Chloe's name, his patience vanished.

"Sienna, can you just be the bigger person for once? I've told you a thousand times, she's just my assistant."

"We have a strictly professional relationship. Why do you keep attacking her? Don't you trust me at all?"

I stared at him, unable to believe the words coming out of his mouth.

My trust hadn't just disappeared; he had systematically destroyed it.

Ever since Chloe became his assistant, his overtime hours had skyrocketed.

Once, when I was burning up with a fever, Chloe called saying she was scared of a thunderstorm.

He left me alone in bed to go spend the night at her apartment.

I stood up and grabbed my suitcase handle. I didn't look back at him.

"Lucas, let's get a divorce."

"My lawyer will have the papers ready. I'll have them sent to your office in a few days."
