Chapter 3
Chapter 3
"You're here." The cold voice snapped me back to reality. He was no longer the young wolf pup he once was.
He stood amidst the flowers, smiling warmly at someone. That someone was a delicate beauty, resting her head on his knee. She was graceful, adorned in colorful attire, with her hair decorated with flowers of various hues, as if she had dressed herself in the colors of the entire world.
Phil beckoned me over with a wave. "Vera, didn't you say you wanted to start over with me?"
He pulled the beauty into his arms. "This is my new wife, Zoey. Why don't you two get acquainted?"
I knew he was trying to provoke me. I fought to extinguish the jealousy and helplessness in my heart, forcing a faint smile. I plucked a flower from the garden and walked over to place it in Zoey's hair.
Phil stared at me with disdain. "Vera, weren't you the one who used to believe in undivided love? A lifetime commitment to one person!"
His words pierced me deeply. That promise was something he had made to me, not the other way around. Yet, he had forgotten and now used it to mock me.
Suddenly, I felt the poison in my body surge. It seemed the toxin was seeking my weakness. When my resolve wavered, it found a way to trap me, pricking my body bit by bit.
I fought through the pain, forcing a calm smile. "The past is dead and gone. People must look forward, especially for someone like me, a spirit."
I couldn't bear his deliberate hurt and questioning, but could my sincerity and patience earn even a moment of his trust?
Perhaps if I endured a little longer, I wouldn't have to suffer the pain of separation...
Perhaps if I held on a bit more, we could be together forever...
I grasped his hand. "Besides, I'm an unconventional spirit, Phil. Why can't we make it work?"
"Is that so?" He frowned. "Vera, I didn't expect you to become so disgusting!" With that, he shook off my hand.
He suddenly smiled, as if relieved. "I'm not like you. In this life, I will only love one person. Zoey, don't you agree?"
The beauty beside him shyly nodded. Phil pulled her into his arms and kissed her passionately.
They kissed fervently in front of me, as if they had done it a thousand times before. Their bodies entwined, hidden in the sea of red flowers.
I stared blankly for a moment until I tasted a hint of blood in my throat. I turned my head away.
Suddenly, my heart felt like it was sinking into a lake, descending endlessly. It hadn't felt this cold in five hundred years.
I reminisced about the distant past...
I had treated the young wolf Phil as my training partner. We trained together day and night.
One full moon night, we were practicing at the top of a cliff.
Phil howled at the moon, while I happily showed my eight fox tails under the moonlight.
"Vera, why do you practice so diligently?"
"When I was young, my father told me that our Fox Clan had a chance to ascend to become true Fox Immortals in my generation. I want to achieve that."
He hurriedly grabbed my hand. "But if you become an immortal, won't you have to give up all earthly attachments and can't marry or have kids? Vera, don't become an immortal! I'm already your husband."
I released his hand, dismissing his words. "You're just a little wolf demon. How could you disturb my resolve? I was just messing with you before. How could you take it seriously?
"If you want to be with me, why not cultivate with me? We can train hard, do good, and help those in need. We will surely become immortals together."
Phil smiled slyly under the moonlight. "Vera, I've heard that before becoming an immortal, one must first see through worldly desires. How can you see through them without experiencing love? I have a method to help you understand it."
"What method?"
