Chapter 2

I was done. I placed the signed divorce papers on the nightstand and walked out.

After dropping my bags at a hotel, my best friend Summer dragged me to her place. She was frantic.

At the dinner table, she asked cautiously, "So, Quentin and Skylar are at Lake Tahoe?"

I shook my head. "I don't know."

In the past, I would have been glued to social media, sobbing over their photos.

Not anymore.

I had told Quentin a thousand times that I wanted to go biking with him along the lake.

He always had an excuse. Now, he was there with Skylar, visiting the place I had dreamed of.

Summer looked at me, stunned. "Girl, are you serious? Have you finally woken up?"

I gave her a bitter smile. "I'm divorcing him."

"Wait, did I hear that right?!" Summer jumped up and hugged me. "Finally! I told you to leave him the second he started acting shady with her!"

"But no, you were so stubborn!"

She started mimicking my old voice in a high pitch. "He promised he'd love me forever! I trust him!"

She scoffed. "If a man's sweet talk was worth anything, pigs would fly!"

Hearing her words, I saw my old self clearly.

I came from a poor background but worked my way into an elite private school.

It was supposed to be my big break, but it became a nightmare.

As soon as I arrived, the other kids bullied me relentlessly for being poor.

Quentin was the one who saved me.

He told me, "Don't be afraid. I'm here."

After that, he became my protector. It was only natural that I fell for him.

But when I finally worked up the nerve to confess, he froze my heart.

"I have a girlfriend," he said. His voice was calm, but it felt like a blade.

That was the first time I heard the name Skylar. I felt so pathetic and small.
