Chapter 3 The Fallout

The room exploded.

Cameras flashed like lightning. Reporters surged forward. Someone screamed. A glass shattered somewhere to my left.

And Damian Ashford just stood there at the podium, staring at me like I'd driven a knife through his chest.

I couldn't breathe.

Adrian's hand tightened on my arm - steady, grounding, possessive. He didn't look at me. He looked at his brother. And he smiled.

"Surprise," he said.

Damian's jaw clenched so hard I thought something might crack.

"Adrian." His voice was ice. "What have you done?"

"What have I done?" Adrian tilted his head. "I married the woman you threw away. Seems fair."

The room was spinning. I could feel every eye on me - the staff, the guests, the press. Victoria Hale was frozen beside Damian, her face pale, her glass still shattered at her feet.

I wanted to run.

I stayed.

Because this was what I signed up for. This was the deal. And if I was going to be a pawn in Adrian Ashford's game, I would at least stand like I belonged on the board.

"Mrs. Ashford." A reporter shoved a microphone in my face. "Is it true you were involved with Damian before marrying Adrian?"

"Sienna." Another voice. "Did you marry Adrian for his money?"

"Sienna, over here - how do you respond to claims that-"

Adrian stepped in front of me.

"Enough," he said. Quiet. Deadly. The room fell silent. "My wife and I have no further comment tonight. You'll receive a statement tomorrow."

He turned. Took my hand. And led me out.

I didn't look back.

But I felt Damian's eyes on me the entire way.

---

The car ride was silent.

I sat in the corner, as far from Adrian as I could get, my hands shaking in my lap. The city lights blurred past the window. I could still hear the cameras. Still see Damian's face.

What have you done.

What have I done.

"You're angry," Adrian said.

I didn't answer.

"That's fair."

Still nothing.

"I should have told you there would be press."

"You should have told me everything." My voice came out sharper than I meant. "You should have told me he'd be there. You should have told me what you were going to say. You should have-"

"I know."

"Stop saying that."

He looked at me. In the dim light of the car, his eyes were dark and unreadable. Just like his brother's. But not. Because Adrian's eyes had something Damian's never did.

Feeling.

"I know I should have told you," he said quietly. "But if I had, you would have said no."

"Because it was wrong."

"Because it was terrifying." He leaned forward. "Sienna, you spent two years loving a man who never saw you. Tonight, I made him see you. I made everyone see you. That's not wrong. That's justice."

"That's not justice." My voice cracked. "That's revenge."

"Same thing."

"No." I shook my head. "It's not. And I'm not going to be your weapon."

He was quiet for a long moment.

Then: "You're not a weapon."

"Then what am I?"

He didn't answer.

And somehow, that was worse than anything he could have said.

---

The penthouse was dark when we got home.

I walked straight to my room and closed the door. Locked it. Pressed my back against it and slid down until I was sitting on the floor.

And then I cried.

I don't know how long I sat there. Long enough that the city lights outside went blurry. Long enough that my chest ached from holding everything in.

Two years.

Two years of quiet glances and stolen moments. Two years of telling myself it was nothing, that I was nothing, that he would never see me the way I saw him.

And then tonight.

Tonight, he saw me.

But only because someone else did first.

There was a knock at the door.

"Sienna."

Adrian's voice. Soft. Careful.

"Go away."

"I brought tea."

"I don't want tea."

A pause. Then: "I brought whiskey."

I almost laughed. Almost.

"I'm not opening the door."

"I know." A beat. "I'll leave it outside. And I'll be in the study if you want to yell at me."

Footsteps. Retreating.

I stayed on the floor.

But when I finally opened the door an hour later, there was a cup of tea on the ground.

Still warm.

And a note.

I'm sorry. - A

I picked up the tea.

I drank it.

And I didn't forgive him. But I didn't leave, either.

---

The next morning, I woke to my phone buzzing.

Twenty-seven missed calls. Hundreds of texts. And a headline that made my blood run cold:

"ASHFORD SCANDAL: Twin Brothers at War Over Mystery Designer"

I stared at the screen.

Then I scrolled.

There were photos. Of me. Of Adrian. Of Damian. Of the ring on my finger. Of my mother's hospital. Of my apartment. Of everything.

They'd already dug into my life.

They'd already found everything.

I walked out of my room in a daze.

Adrian was in the kitchen, shirtless, coffee in hand, reading something on his phone. He looked up when I walked in.

"You've seen."

"Everyone's seen."

He set down his phone. "It'll blow over."

"Will it?" I held up my screen. "They know where my mother is. They know where I lived. They know-"

"Sienna."

I stopped.

He walked toward me. Slowly. The way you'd approach a wounded animal.

"They know because I let them," he said.

My heart stopped.

"What?"

"I gave them a story." His voice was calm. Controlled. "The rejected girl who married the forgotten twin. It's irresistible. It'll dominate the news cycle for weeks."

"You - you planned this?"

"I planned everything." He stopped in front of me. "The terrace. The contract. The press conference. The leak. All of it."

The room tilted.

"Why?"

"Because I needed Damian to react." His eyes burned. "And he will. He always does. He'll come for you. He won't be able to help himself. And when he does..."

He smiled.

"...I'll be ready."

I stared at him.

"You're using me as bait."

"I'm using you as a trap." He tilted his head. "There's a difference."

"No." I stepped back. "There isn't."

"Sienna-"

"Don't." My voice broke. "Don't you dare pretend this is about me. This is about him. It's always been about him. You didn't marry me to save me. You married me to hurt him."

His expression flickered.

Just for a second.

Then it was gone.

"Maybe," he said quietly. "But does it matter? You signed the contract. You took the money. Your mother's bills are paid. You're safe. You're powerful. Whatever my reasons were-"

"I'm a pawn."

"You're a queen." He stepped closer. "And I'm teaching you to play the game."

I shook my head.

"I don't want to play."

"Too late."

The doorbell rang.

We both froze.

Adrian's eyes went to the door. Then to me. And something in his face shifted - surprise, then something darker. Something hungry.

"He's here," he said.

I knew who he meant.

I knew before Adrian said it.

"Don't open it," I whispered.

Adrian looked at me.

And then he smiled.

"I've been waiting for this," he said.

He walked to the door.

And he opened it.
