The hand I raised never came down.

I silently wiped the tears from my eyes, washed up, and went back to my room.

But I couldn't close my eyes all night.

The next morning, Emmett woke up on his own without my reminder.

The nausea and dizziness from the hangover made his face look a bit haggard.

I didn't mention what happened last night.

I pretended to care like I normally would.

"Since you aren't feeling well, why don't you just stay home today?"

Surprisingly, a man who never cared much about the company suddenly looked very serious.

"There's a very important meeting at the company that I can't miss, otherwise I'd stay home with you."

After saying that, Emmett gave me a half-hearted peck on my forehead.

He grabbed his coat and rushed out the door.

After watching him go downstairs, I took a tissue and wiped the forehead he had just kissed.

I clenched my fists tightly, trying my best to keep my breathing steady.

Four months ago, because of random fainting spells, I went to the hospital for a checkup.

Before I could even be happy about being six weeks pregnant, the doctor gave me another piece of news.

My heart had developed a severe condition, and my body absolutely could not handle carrying a baby.

But even if I didn't keep it, I couldn't stop the disease from getting worse.

No matter what I chose, the outcome was the same.

"I am going to die?"

In the office, the doctor's expression grew heavier.

He just nodded, silently confirming everything.

The moment I was handed my death sentence, I was surprisingly calm.

I reached out and touched my belly, faintly feeling the tiny heartbeat.

I made a decision right then and there.

Even if I had to die, I would try my best to protect this hard-earned baby.

Looking back now, it was really one of the stupidest choices I had ever made.

Fueled by suspicion, I changed my clothes and hailed a cab on the street.

I rushed straight to Emmett's company.

But the moment I stepped through the front door, I crashed right into Blair.

We stared at each other, stunned for a long time without anyone speaking first.

Then Emmett suddenly walked over from behind and kissed her cheek with a smile.

"Why are you in such a hurry to leave? Didn't we agree to go to your place after work?"
