Chapter 1
"Daddy, are we really not going?"
Chloe' s voice was small, her eyes big and hopeful as she looked up at me. She was holding the new dress we' d bought just for the Memorial Day gala, the one her mother was supposed to take her to.
I smoothed her hair. "Mommy said she has a very important political thing, sweetie. It's last minute."
"But she promised," Chloe whispered, her lower lip trembling. The dress slipped from her fingers and pooled on the floor.
Ava, my wife, had called an hour ago. Her voice was crisp, professional, the same one she used on TV. "Ethan, something's come up. A critical function with donors. You and Chloe will have to stay home. It's for the campaign."
Disappointment hit me, but it was for Chloe that my heart ached. This was supposed to be a special night for her.
I looked at my daughter, her face a mask of sadness. Screw the campaign. Screw the last-minute function.
"You know what?" I said, picking up the dress. "Let's go anyway. We can surprise her."
Chloe' s face lit up instantly. "Really?"
"Really," I confirmed, pulling out my old, low-level staff pass from a drawer. It wouldn't get us into the VIP section, but it would get us through the door. That was all we needed.
I just wanted my daughter to have her night. I had no idea it would be the night our world shattered.
The gala was in full swing when we arrived. It was a sea of expensive suits and glittering dresses, held at a grand D.C. estate. National news cameras were everywhere, their lights sweeping across the manicured lawns.
And there, on a massive stage under a spotlight, was my wife, Ava.
She wasn't at a "critical political function."
She was standing next to Mark, her Chief of Staff, her hand resting on his arm. Next to them stood his son, Liam, looking smug. A famous news anchor was interviewing them, her voice booming over the speakers.
"Congresswoman, you and your husband Mark are truly D.C.'s power couple. And Liam, you must be so proud of your parents."
Ava smiled, a perfect, camera-ready smile. "Mark is my rock. And we are so, so proud of our wonderful son."
The world tilted. My son? Our son?
I felt Chloe' s small hand tighten in mine. "Daddy, why is Mommy with Mr. Mark? And why is she calling Liam her son?"
My blood ran cold. This wasn't just a political show. This was a public erasure. She was replacing us.
Holding Chloe's hand, I walked toward the stage. My heart pounded against my ribs, a drumbeat of anger and disbelief. I had to stop this. I had to know why.
We reached the edge of the stage, and I called out, my voice steady despite the storm inside me.
"Ava."
She turned, her smile faltering for a split second when she saw me.
"Why are you pretending another man's son is yours, Ava? Chloe is your daughter. She's standing right here."
