Chapter 1
The morning after Ethan and I made love, his lawyer showed up at our apartment.
The man wore a crisp suit and a professional, detached expression. He placed a thick manila folder on the coffee table. Inside were the deed to the Upper East Side condo we shared, a set of keys to a new Mercedes-Benz, and a confirmation of a $1.8 million wire transfer to my bank account.
"Mr. Lester instructed me to deliver these to you, Ms. Johns," the lawyer said, his voice flat. "He considers this a severance package for your four years of companionship."
I stared at the documents, the words blurring together. Just hours ago, Ethan had held me, his touch more tender, more desperate than ever before. He had whispered promises into my hair, his voice thick with an emotion I couldn't name.
Now this.
"Where is he?" I asked, my own voice sounding distant.
"Mr. Lester has already returned to Dallas. He has a prior engagement to attend to," the lawyer replied, avoiding my eyes.
I stood up, the silk robe Ethan loved feeling suddenly cheap and cold against my skin. "I don' t understand. We were just…"
"He left a message for you," the lawyer interrupted, his tone softening slightly, as if reciting a line he' d been forced to memorize. He finally looked at me. "He said, 'Wendy, for people from families like mine, love and marriage are two different things. I' m going back to Dallas for an arranged marriage. Understand?' "
The word 'understand' hung in the air, a cold, sharp command. It wasn't a question. It was a dismissal. The lawyer saw the look on my face, gave a slight, almost sympathetic nod, and let himself out.
The heavy door clicked shut, leaving me alone in the silent, sun-drenched apartment that was no longer ours, but mine. A cage paid for in full.
I didn't cry. I walked to the window, looking down at the bustling New York streets. The city felt alien, hostile. The love story I thought I was living had just been revealed as a four-year business transaction. And I had just been paid out.
But one detail stuck with me, a piece that didn' t fit the cold narrative. The lawyer mentioned Ethan' s specific instructions: "Do not arrive before 9 AM. Do not disturb her sleep."
Why would a man orchestrating such a heartless breakup care if I got enough sleep? It was a small, nonsensical act of kindness in the middle of a betrayal.
And it was that single detail that convinced me. He was being forced.
I picked up my phone. I didn't call Ethan. I called a number he never knew I had.
"Anthony," I said, my voice steady. "I need a flight to Dallas. Immediately."
