Chapter 3 Paying off debts with one's body, flash marriage.
Chapter 3: Paying off debts with one's body, flash marriage.
Maggie had never been good with numbers, nor did she understand finance. She had no idea what ten percent meant. "How much money are we talking about? Tell me if I can afford it."
"120 million."
Maggie almost fainted. "How much?"
"120 million."
"I can't pay that."
Maggie said resolutely.
Dominic's lips curled into a sly smile. "I know you can't pay that amount, but you can compensate in other ways."
Maggie clutched her white coat tightly. "I'm a respectable person!"
"Oh, really? Would a respectable person kiss a stranger out of the blue?"
Maggie was at a loss for words. "So, what exactly do you want?"
"Marry me."
Maggie couldn't believe her ears. "What did you say?"
"I said, let's get married."
Maggie thought Dominic was even more insane than she was. "We've known each other for less than 24 hours. Do all rich people act this casually?"
Dominic didn't respond. Instead, he stood up, took a document out of his briefcase, and handed it to Maggie. "I'll fabricate a love story for us, and you just need to play along. Once the media frenzy dies down and the stock price recovers, we'll get divorced."
Seeing Dominic's serious expression, Maggie felt a twinge of disappointment. So all his flirting earlier was just to set up this contract. "What if I don't agree?"
"Then you'll be sued."
"Sue me for what? I haven't broken any laws."
"For sexual harassment."
Maggie clenched her fists, fighting the urge to punch Dominic. She took the document from his hand and read it carefully. She pointed to one of the clauses and asked, "Do we have to live together during this period?"
Dominic nodded. "If we're going to act, we need to do it thoroughly. Don't worry, the contract states that I won't touch you."
Dominic's words made Maggie feel like she was some kind of germ, which made her uncomfortable. But his next words dispelled all her resistance. "I forgot to mention, my brother Brody lives with me."
"You should have said that earlier!" Maggie signed her name without hesitation.
"See you at the Marriage Registry Office at ten tomorrow morning," Dominic said coldly, packing up his things and leaving.
Maggie suddenly felt a void in her heart.
The next day, Maggie was waiting at the entrance of the Marriage Registry Office when she unexpectedly saw Andrew and Rebecca, the pair of troublemakers.
Maggie turned her back, hoping to pretend she hadn't seen them, but Rebecca, with her sharp eyes, recognized her and walked over with a haughty stride.
"Meg, how did you know we were getting our marriage certificate today? You must be here to congratulate us, right?" Rebecca affectionately linked arms with Maggie, putting her in a moral dilemma. If Maggie said she wasn't here to congratulate them, she would seem petty.
Maggie pulled her arm away, forced a smile, and looked up at Andrew's annoying face. She couldn't resist slapping him.
"Forget morals, I just want to blow off some steam," Maggie said. "This slap should have been given to you that night. I've held it in for days."
A crowd began to gather, and some people recognized Maggie and the others from the trending topics. They started taking videos with their phones. Rebecca, seeing this, cried and tried to grab Maggie's hand. "Meg, I..."
"Smack!" Maggie didn't give Rebecca a chance to finish her sentence and slapped her again. "I've been holding this slap back for a long time too."
Dominic, who had been watching the scene unfold, decided it was the right moment. He pushed through the crowd and took Maggie's hand. "Honey, there you are. I've been looking for you. It's our turn."
"Let's go. I'm done here anyway."
Maggie, pretending to be a loving wife, linked arms with Dominic, making Andrew's face turn green with envy.
Unwilling to give up, Andrew tried to follow them, but Rebecca, still crying, held him back. "Are we still getting our marriage certificate?"
Andrew glanced at the crowd around them and lost interest. "Damn it, I should have checked my horoscope before leaving today. Let's do it another day."
Rebecca, unwilling but with no choice, was pulled away by Andrew. As they left, she turned to see Dominic handing Maggie a large bouquet of roses from who knows where. Seeing the two of them looking so happy, Rebecca suddenly began to despise the man she had fought so hard to win.
