Chapter 3 Chapter 3

Brooke POV:

For a heartbeat, the world stopped. In his wide, shocked eyes, I saw the reflection of my own stunned realization. The bond, the fated connection prophesied in all the old legends, snapped into place between us, undeniable and absolute. This wasn't a contract. It was destiny. A destiny he was in the process of destroying.

Then, as quickly as it appeared, the recognition in his eyes was gone, replaced by a wall of cold, furious denial. He ripped his hand away from my arm as if he'd been burned, the loss of contact leaving my skin tingling and cold.

"A cheap trick," he spat, his voice rough with an emotion he refused to name. "Whatever Omega magic you think you're playing, it won't work."

The cruelty of his words was a physical blow. He had felt the truth, the sacred bond gifted to us by the Goddess herself, and he had chosen to call it a lie.

"Easton, please," Kelly whimpered, tugging on his arm, pulling his attention back to her. "Don't be angry. Maybe she was just desperate. I heard her mother's treatments are expensive..."

Her poison was strategic, every word designed to paint me as a pathetic, thieving Omega.

"Search her things," Easton commanded, his voice flat and dead. He wouldn't even look at me. He couldn't. Because if he did, he would see the truth reflected in my eyes.

Two of his elite warriors appeared in the doorway, their faces blank, impassive. They were bound by his command. They walked past me and into my room. I stood frozen, the echo of that electric touch still vibrating through my soul, the world tilting on its axis. He was my mate. And he was doing this to me.

One of the guards came out holding my simple handbag. He didn't have to look for long. He reached inside and pulled out a glittering, beautiful necklace made of pure moonstone-the Crimsonfang Pack's sacred heirloom.

Kelly gasped theatrically.

Easton finally turned to look at me. There was no doubt in his eyes. No conflict. Only cold, hard conviction. He believed her. Of course, he did. He had always chosen to believe her.

"Take her to the cells," he said, the words falling like stones into the silence. "Line them with silver."

The guards snapped the silver cuffs onto my wrists. The metal seared my skin, a familiar, agonizing burn that was nothing compared to the pain of the bond he had just rejected. As they dragged me away, my eyes met his one last time.

He looked away.

The silver-lined cell was a place where strength went to die. The metal hummed with a low energy that leached the power from my body, leaving my wolf whimpering and my limbs heavy and weak. I shivered on the cold stone floor, the burn from the cuffs a constant, throbbing agony.

I spent the night in that cold, silver hell, but it wasn't the physical pain that consumed me. It was the memory of that single, shocking moment of connection. Mine. The word echoed in the ruins of my heart. The Goddess had shown me the truth only to have it ripped away.

The next morning, the cell door creaked open. My mother stood there, her face a mask of grief. She looked older, frailer than I'd ever seen her. An elder guard stood behind her, his expression grim.

My mother held up her hands, her fingers moving in the old, intricate sign language of our pack. I have secured your release.

How? I signed back, my own movements clumsy.

She opened her palm. It was empty. The silver locket from our first Luna, a sacred relic she had worn around her neck every day since our pack fell, was gone. She had traded the last piece of our history, the last piece of her heart, for my freedom.

The price was our immediate and permanent exile.

As we were being escorted to the pack border, defeated and broken, my mind-link chimed one final time. It was him. The connection felt raw, supercharged by the bond he refused to acknowledge.

*Go to Kelly, *his mental voice commanded, cold and imperious. *Kneel before her and apologize for what you did.*

I stopped walking. The guards paused behind me. My mother looked at me, her eyes full of alarm.

A bitter, broken sound that might have been a laugh escaped my lips. He was my mate, and his final command to me was to kneel before my tormentor.

I closed my eyes, gathering every ounce of pain, every memory of humiliation, every shattered hope from the last five years. I focused it all on that vibrant, thrumming connection between us. I reached for the sacred thread that the Goddess had woven, the one he had just spat upon.

And with a final, guttural scream that echoed only in the space between our souls, I ripped it apart.

The connection severed with a psychic snap that felt like my soul was being torn in two. A wave of agony so profound it buckled my knees washed over me, and I cried out, clutching my chest.

But as my mother helped me to my feet and we stepped across the border, leaving the Blackwood lands behind forever, the pain was already being replaced by a vast, cold, and terrifying silence.

It was the sound of freedom.

That's everything available right now.
