Chapter 1 The Man in The Black Suit
The cardboard edge of the supply box bit into Elena's forearm, leaving a red indentation. She shifted her grip, ignoring the sweat slicking her palms.
Around her, the clearing buzzed with the low hum of Blackthorn pack business. It was a neutral gathering,a monthly market for medical supplies, rogue wolves looking for work, and pack officials trading information. Elena kept her head down, her canvas jacket zipped to her throat. She was just the clinic assistant from the border. She was nobody.
She set the box of antiseptics down on a wooden trestle table.
"Careful with those," she told the older wolf behind the table. "The glass vials are fragile."
A sudden, violent shift in the air stole the breath from her lungs.
It wasn't a sound. It was a pressure. The hair on the back of her neck stood up, her skin prickling as if a storm had just broken directly overhead. The casual chatter of the clearing died instantly.
Elena looked up.
A man was walking through the crowd. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, the fabric stretching over broad shoulders. He didn't walk so much as prowl, his boots silent against the dirt. Power radiated from him in waves so thick they felt physical.
Alpha Kael Draven.
Elena's heart hammered a frantic, bird-like rhythm against her ribs. She forced herself to breathe, stay perfectly still. She had heard the whispers about the Blackthorn Alpha. Ruthless. Unforgiving.
He stopped twenty feet away.
His head turned, a slow, deliberate motion. His gaze swept over the crowd, a predator scanning for prey until it locked on her.
The impact was a physical blow.
Her wolf, usually a quiet, dormant presence in her chest, surged forward with a violent, desperate howl. Elena's knees gave away. She slapped her hand flat against the wooden table, her nails digging into the splintered wood to keep from collapsing.
A searing, electric heat raced up her spine, wrapping around her throat, choking her. It was a magnetic pull, a gravitational shift that dragged her soul toward him.She couldn't look away.
A muscle ticked in Kael's cheek. His eyes, a piercing, glacial blue, flared with a wild, feral hunger. The composed Alpha vanished, in his place was a beast barely restrained by a tailored suit.
He moved. The crowd parted like water, instinctually terrified. He didn't stop until he was standing on the other side of the trestle table, close enough that she could smell him, pine, crushed leaves and a sharp, metallic tang of ozone.
He reached out. His fingers, rough and impossibly hot, brushed against her chin.
Elena flinched, her spine going rigid. She tried to jerk her head back, to break the contact, but her body refused to obey.
"Mate" he murmured. The word was a low, guttural rasp that vibrated directly in her chest.
Elena's throat closed. She tried to swallow, but her mouth was bone-dry. "You're mistaken."
"Look at me," Kael commanded. His voice was quiet, but it resonated with the weight of thunder.
She was already looking at him. She couldn't blink. The mate bond was a living tether, a wire pulled taut between her ribs and his. It felt like burning.
Kael leaned in, his thumb grazing the frantic, fluttering pulse beneath her jaw. "I am not mistaken. The bond doesn't lie."
"Let go of me," Elena managed, her voice cracked. She reached up, her fingers trembling so violently she could barely grip his wrist. She pushed. His arm didn't move an inch.
"One step outside this territory," Kael said, his eyes dropping to her mouth, his breathing heavy, "and you will be hunted. You belong with me."
The arrogance of it snapped the paralyzing haze.
Elena shoved his wrist hard, wrenching her chin out of his grasp. The sudden lack of contact left a cold, aching void in her chest that she violently ignored.
"I don't belong to anyone," she said.
She didn't wait for his response. She turned, her boots crunching loudly on the gravel. She didn't run. She wouldn't give him the satisfaction but she walked fast, shoving past the frozen onlookers. She could feel his stare on her back like a physical weight, burning a hole right between her shoulder blades.
She made it to her truck. She yanked the door open, her fingers slipping on the handle, and threw herself into the driver's seat.
---
Kael stood frozen in the clearing, watching the dust kick up as her truck peeled out of the lot.
His wolf was thrashing violently against the cage of his skin, clawing to be let out. The scent of her,The sharp, wet scent of rain mixing with the sweet crushed lilies was lodged in his lungs, suffocating him.
Mine.
He flexed his right hand. Her skin had been soft, but her defiance had been like a slap to the face. No one spoke to him like that. No one looked at him with that sharp, unyielding rebellion.
And no one had ever run from him.
Kael's lips parted, his breath misting in the cold air. The emptiness her departure left behind was a physical, gnawing agony. She was out there. Alone. Vulnerable.
A slow, dangerous smile spread across his face, devoid of warmth.
"Adrian," he said, his voice cutting through the tense silence.
His Beta stepped forward from the shadows, bowing his head slightly. "Alpha."
"Find out where she lives," Kael commanded. He pulled a silver lighter from his pocket, the metal cold against his thumb. He flicked the lid open, letting the flame catch the wind. "And double the guards on the northern border."
Adrian hesitated. "Alpha, she-"
"Find her," Kael growled, his eyes shifting to a glowing, luminous amber. "Before someone else does."
