Chapter 3
Mia POV
For three hours, my burner phones did not cease their vibrating.
Julian had flooded every secure line I owned with calls and messages. Each one oscillated between rage and desperation—threats of violence, then pleas to come back, then fresh threats when I didn't respond. I ignored them all.
I sat behind the wide expanse of my own black walnut desk in my law firm, drafting the final pieces of my ruthless severance agreement. Not the courtesy copy Julian had shredded—the real one.
As the Falcone's top lawyer, I knew every loophole, every hidden asset, every offshore account.
I systematically untangled my finances, my underworld clients, and my ties of silence from the Falcone Family.
I was stripping away every ounce of legal protection I had built for him. And with each document I finalized, I forwarded copies to the encrypted server Silas Russo had provided—my first payment in an alliance that would burn Julian's world to ash.
The plate glass doors of my office suite shattered inward with a percussive boom that shook the floor.
I did not flinch.
Keeping my eyes fixed on my monitor, I listened as Julian marched into my office, flanked by six armed Soldiers this time—more than he'd ever brought to any business meeting I'd attended.
His suit jacket was gone, his tie pulled loose at his throat, and a vein throbbed at his temple with each ragged breath.
"You do not leave me," Julian snarled, slamming his hands flat on my desk. "You do not get to walk away. And you do not threaten my family with federal investigations. "
"The audits are already in motion," I said, my voice devoid of inflection. "The IRS doesn't unring bells, Julian. Neither do I."
I hit the print command on my keyboard once more—not for a document, but for the single photograph I had pulled from the encrypted Falcone servers. The printer in the corner hummed to life, spitting out a high-resolution image: Julian and the Marchesi Don, shaking hands over the blood pact, a casket of weapons visible in the background.
"Breaking our bond does not require your permission," I continued. "But if you want to drag this out, I will drag every one of your secrets into open court. Including this one. How long do you think the Marchesi alliance survives when their weapons deals are public record?"
I gathered the papers—the photo, the pact, the new severance agreement—and slid them across the desk's polished surface toward him.
"These are ironclad. I am no longer your lawyer, and I am no longer your secret."
Julian seized the papers. The sound of tearing was sharp and violent in the quiet room; the pieces drifted down like cheap confetti, settling on the toes of his expensive shoes. But this time, the destruction did not bring him satisfaction. His hands were shaking.
"I am not letting you leave my territory, Mia," he growled. "You know too much. You belong to me."
I stood up, matching his gaze.
"I bled for your Family. I saved your mother's life. I signed waivers that would have put me in prison if she died. I laundered millions. I kept federal agents from your door for five years. And while I was doing all of that , you were signing a Marchesi blood pact. You are unworthy of the five years I gave you."
Julian paled. The ruthless Don facade cracked, revealing the desperate man underneath.
"It was a mistake," he said, his voice dropping to a frantic whisper.
He lunged across the desk, his fingers gripping my wrist with bruising force.
"I will break the alliance. I will cancel the wedding. Just stay. Just undo whatever you've done. "
I stared down at his hand on my wrist, then slowly brought my gaze back up to his eyes.
"Serena has a bridal fitting tomorrow, Julian," I reminded him coldly. "My love for you died the moment I saw you with her at that hotel. My respect died the moment you called me 'the woman you keep.' It ends now. "
"I will never let you go," he threatened, his grip tightening until I could feel the small bones in my wrist grind together. "You are mine."
"Let go of my fiancée," a dark, smooth voice came from the doorway.
The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. Julian froze.
He slowly turned his head, his grip on my wrist loosening just enough for me to wrench my arm away.
Silas Russo stepped into the office.
As the youngest, most lethal Don to rise in a generation, he ruled the rival Russo Family with a level of calculated terror that made even Julian hesitate. Everyone in the underworld knew the stories: three rival Dons eliminated in a single year, a network of informants so deep that no one dared whisper a betrayal, a reputation for repaying loyalty with power and treachery with oblivion.
Silas was dressed in a tailored black suit, his dark hair perfectly styled, and his eyes were like chips of obsidian that seemed to absorb the room's light.
He strolled past Julian's armed Soldiers as if they were furniture. Two of them instinctively stepped back. They knew exactly who he was and what he was capable of.
He stopped beside me, wrapping a heavy, possessive arm around my waist and pulling me flush against his side.
"Falcone," Silas said, his voice carrying the lazy menace of a predator who knew he had already won. "I hear you're having accounting problems. Three accounts frozen, is it? Terrible timing. The Marchesi family does so hate financial instability in their allies."
Julian's face went ashen. "You're behind this."
"Behind what?" Silas tilted his head, feigning innocence. "I'm just a concerned competitor, picking up your former lawyer for a cup of coffee. The fact that she brought me five years of your financial records was simply... a bonus."
Julian's phone rang, the sharp sound cutting through the tension.
Serena's voice echoed from the speaker, shrill and demanding. "Julian, you are late for the boutique. My father is asking questions about frozen accounts. What is happening? "
Silas tilted his head, a mocking smirk playing on his lips. "Congratulations on your impending alliance, Falcone. I do hope it survives the week. Now get out of my woman's office."
Julian looked between me and Silas, his chest rising and falling with rapid, shallow breaths.
He realized in that moment that he was outmatched. Starting a war with the Russo Family inside a civilian law firm—while his financial house was already on fire—was suicide.
Slowly, Julian backed away, his eyes burning with a toxic mix of hatred and obsession. "This is not over, Mia. I will burn this city to the ground before I let him have you. "
"The only thing burning right now is your empire," I said. "And I lit the match."
When Julian had finally stepped over the sea of shattered glass and left the office, Silas dropped his arm from my waist.
We walked in silence down to the underground parking garage and got into the back of his armored SUV.
The doors locked with a heavy, final thud.
The adrenaline left my body in a sudden rush, and my hands started to shake violently. I gripped my knees, fighting to breathe.
Silas opened a concealed compartment, poured a glass of amber liquid, and handed it to me.
"Drink," he commanded, his tone unexpectedly soft. "You just declared war on one of the most powerful families in the city. The shaking is normal. Let it pass."
I swallowed the harsh burn of the liquor, letting it anchor me.
"I hired you to fake an engagement because it was my only shield against his Soldiers," I explained, my voice trembling. "He would have locked me in a basement to keep me quiet. Or worse. "
Silas watched me closely, his dark, calculating eyes assessing my worth.
"I accept the contract, Mia. You launder my operations—legally, cleanly, better than anyone I've ever employed—and I keep you untouchable. "
I nodded, my mind already plotting how to legally strip the Falcones bare. The frozen accounts were just the beginning. I had a list of thirty-seven vulnerabilities in Julian's empire, and I intended to exploit every single one.
