Chapter 2
2
Hearing my words, Harrison pulled me even tighter, nuzzling his nose against the curve of my neck.
"Is my baby mad because I've been too busy lately? Once you're in a better mood, will you grant me the honor?"
I didn't know how I eventually drifted off. When I woke up the next morning, a rack of this season's latest designer outfits was already lined up before my bed.
Harrison was standing there steaming a silk blouse, just like he always did. Noticing me stirring, he turned around with a warm smile.
"Morning, sleepyhead. Do you want to try on your new clothes now, or sleep in a little longer?"
I stayed motionless, lying flat on the mattress and staring blankly at him.
Ever since we got married, he had handled every detail of my life personally, whether big or small.
I genuinely could not understand it.
How could a man so thoughtful and attentive cheat on me?
Looking at the clothes lined up on the rack, every single piece suited my taste perfectly.
The moment I stepped out of bed, Harrison picked up a dress to hold it against me.
"Rowan, my movie premiere is next week. Do you want to come with me?"
Over the years, every single one of his films had involved me behind the scenes in some way.
He always went out of his way to make me feel included.
Yet this time, even wearing my favorite designer brand, the fabric felt like a heavy weight suffocating my chest.
"I'm not going. I've been exhausted lately, and I just want to rest."
Harrison didn't push back. He gently wrapped an arm around my shoulders, drawing me into his chest.
"Then don't go. It's my fault for neglecting you lately. I won't go either; I'll stay home and keep you company."
I looked up at his face.
Just like countless times before, his expression was completely earnest, without a trace of hesitation.
He was always worried about my insecurities, reporting every detail of his day and waiting for my approval before making any decisions.
Even for high-profile fan meets or red carpet events, if I felt unwell, he would cancel his own appearance on the spot.
People in his circle used to tease him about it constantly. "Even devoted husbands have limits! You act like you're the only man on earth with a wife."
"What makes Rowan so different from other women that you treat her like a sacred treasure?"
He would always reply without missing a beat. "Without Rowan, I would die."
He had poured years of sweat into this upcoming premiere; it was the culmination of his lifelong dream.
Hesitating, I murmured softly. "You put so much heart into this project. You should still go."
Harrison tightened his embrace and pressed a gentle kiss against my forehead.
"Rowan, nothing in my world is more important than you. Everything else is just a backdrop to make you happy."
In the end, I caved and agreed to attend the premiere with him.
When I carried the new clothes back into the closet, my hand instinctively reached into the jacket pocket from the night before.
The pocket was completely empty.
Dazed, I walked toward the front door, only to freeze dead in my tracks at the sight on the porch.
The girl from the photograph was standing right outside our door, tugging playfully at Harrison's sleeve.
"Harrison, you haven't texted me in two days. Have you forgotten about me already?"
