Chapter 2

2

Since I was a kid, nothing was ever truly mine.

Not my parents' affection, not the snacks in the pantry, and definitely not the toys.

I was always the one following Yvonne around, picking up her hand-me-downs.

I never held it against them, though.

Even after I started working and making a high six-figure salary, I sent most of my paycheck home.

I just wanted them to live a better life.

But it was all for nothing.

They spent my money while bragging to everyone about how "sweet and talented" Yvonne was.

They never mentioned me. Not even a single word.

I used to think that, deep down, they loved me in their own weird way.

But this accident changed everything. I couldn't lie to myself anymore.

They didn't just love Yvonne more―they straight up didn't care if I lived or died.

I stared at Yvonne's provocative post for a long time.

Normally, I would have just scrolled past it to avoid the drama.

But I had literally just stared death in the face.

If I kept living like a doormat, I'd be disrespecting my own survival.

I let out a cold laugh and typed a few words with my trembling fingers.

"What a touching mother-daughter bond. Starting next month, since you're such a favorite, you can start paying for her living expenses yourself."

I hit send and shut off the screen immediately.

Yvonne was two years older than me, but she had never held a real job.

She stayed at home, living off my parents.

And my parents were both retired.

Basically, the entire Miller family lived off my bank account.

Yvonne spent my hard-earned cash to pretend she was some high-society princess on social media.

In reality, she was a broke loser who had to beg me for money every time a new iPhone came out.

There was no way she could afford my parents' expensive lifestyle.

I wanted to see how long this "touching bond" would last once my money was out of the equation.

As expected, my phone started screaming a minute later.

I looked at the caller ID―a number that hadn't called me in months―and felt a wave of disgust.

The only time she remembered she had a second daughter was when she wanted a handout.

As soon as I picked up, my mother's voice shrieked through the speaker like a banshee.

"Macy Miller! Are you insane? You know your sister was just injured! She's fragile right now!"

"What the hell did you post on her wall? She's crying because of you! Are you happy now?"

"If you want to ever step foot in this house again, you better send your sister fifteen thousand dollars right now! Then get your ass over here and apologize on your knees!"

I actually laughed out loud at the absurdity of it.

I didn't know how she had the nerve to expect me to pay up just so Yvonne could be happy.

I touched the rough fabric of my hospital gown and spoke calmly.

"Mom, I was in a car crash too. Why haven't you come to see me even once?"

She went silent for a second, but then she doubled down with zero remorse.

"The fact that you're calling me proves you're fine! Besides, Yvonne's injuries were serious! I don't have time to deal with your little scrapes!"

"Hurry up and get out of that hospital. Stop wasting money on a room you don't need!"

Every word was a jagged blade to my heart.

No one would believe these were the words of a mother to her child.

I didn't feel like arguing anymore, so I just frowned.

"I meant what I said. The bills are due soon, and I'm not sending a single cent. Ask your precious eldest daughter for the money."

I hung up before she could explode.
