Chapter 2

2.

Callie drained her glass in one go. she leaned her head against the male model next to her.

“It’s fine. You all know my history with Harrison. He stayed by my side during my darkest years.”

“It’s natural to think we’d get married.”

“But do you want to know why we’ve been together for ten years and I still haven't mentioned a wedding?”

I stared at her cold, distant eyes, waiting for the answer.

Every time I had brought up marriage, she dodged the question. She always changed the subject.

“Oh, Callie, we know you’re just planning a huge surprise for him, right?” someone chirped.

“Yeah, is chartering this yacht your way of proposing to him?”

“Neither,” Callie said.

“I’ll make it clear for everyone today.”

She leaned over and kissed the male model on the cheek.

Her slender fingers traced circles on his abs. Her face was a mask of indifference.

“Seeing Harrison just reminds me of how pathetic I used to be.”

“He took care of me back then, but now? I’m out of his league.”

“That’s why I haven't brought up marriage.”

She pushed the model away and stood up.

“You all understand now? Don't mention his name in front of me again,” she snapped.

Everyone nodded frantically, too scared to cross her.

My heart shattered right then and there.

Eight years of companionship and care. I had given up everything to give her healthy legs.

I thought she loved me.

Now I realized I was just a ghost from a past she wanted to bury.
