Chapter 2

Unfortunately, ideals are rich, but reality is thin.

When my mother excitedly told me that the Sterlings had chosen our family for a marriage alliance, I nearly screamed in despair.

“Why so sudden?”

I asked with a stiff face.

I remembered this part well.

In the dream, I fell in love with Damon after he saved me, sucking up to his mother and using the Montgomery connections to help him close deals just to earn a marriage contract.

But now, I had done absolutely nothing. Why would the Sterlings still want a union?

Did they have ulterior motives for our family?

Recalling how quickly the Montgomerys were destroyed in the book, I felt something was off.

Mother patted my head with a smile.

“Mrs. Sterling said that when that girl fell into the water at the banquet, you were the only one who didn’t hesitate to jump in to save her. Even though you didn’t pull her out, she felt your heart was in the right place and wants a daughter-in-law like you.”

This was even more suspicious. As the head of the Sterling house, how could she not know I was pushed, not that I jumped in myself?

They definitely had a hidden agenda!

I furrowed my brows, feeling trapped.

Our family was well-off, but no match for the Sterlings.

Besides, while Damon was a bit of a psycho, the public saw him as a successful, high-value bachelor.

Without a clear conflict of interest or unbearable flaws, my family would never agree to me rejecting such an elite husband.

I sighed and decided to take things one step at a time. I’d visit the heroine, try to build a relationship, and maybe fish for some information.

Yet, looking at the trembling girl sitting before me, I glanced at my own stunning reflection in the window.

I came here to befriend her!

I was beautiful, noble, and kind!

Sienna, what is with that terrified look on your face? Seriously!
