Chapter 3

In the end, I didn't have the courage.

My hand touched the doorknob and then pulled back.

I was afraid that if I forced her hand, she would choose to burn it all down.

And I would truly have nothing.

She was the worshipped goddess of the silver screen.

I was just a nameless assistant and manager.

What right did I have to demand the truth?

A ping from my phone woke me up from a shallow sleep.

It was just a notification about a bill.

I sat on the dusty sofa, my eyes burning.

I was too tired to even cry.

I realized I'd left my passport and some documents at our old place.

The next morning, I drove back.

As soon as I walked in, I smelled the aroma of a home-cooked breakfast.

Jade looked at me and smiled naturally.

"Go wash your hands. I was waiting for you."

I felt a small flicker of hope. Maybe we could talk about the breakup like adults.

Then I saw Xavier sitting on the corner of the sofa.

His shirt was unbuttoned halfway, and there were faint red marks on his neck.

He looked at me with total indifference.

He stood up and intentionally bumped his shoulder into mine as he walked past.

He tossed me a pair of car keys.

"Management called about moving the car. Since you're here, go take care of it."

He really believed I was just a servant he could boss around.

"Move it. What are you waiting for?"

I looked at Jade. She didn't explain a thing.

She just looked at me, silently telling me to do what Xavier said.

I waited a few seconds, then dropped the keys on the floor.

I looked Xavier in the eye.

"Get your own people to do your dirty work. I'm not your maid."

The atmosphere in the living room turned to ice.

Xavier's face twisted with anger.

But since Jade was there, he pulled a pathetic face and sighed.

"I forgot you were Jade's senior assistant. I'm sorry. I overstepped."

A second later, Jade's voice rang out like thunder.

"Xavier is my fiancé. His business is my business. Why are you being so difficult?"
