Chapter 2 The Warmth Of a Stranger

She looked up at him, her round, deep blue eyes shining with a mix of raw innocence and hidden passion. They were the color of a stormy ocean, beautiful yet filled with a desperate pain. "Why... why should I trust you, Mr...?" her voice trailed off, a delicate whisper lost in the cool breeze. "Thorne. Ethan Thorne," he stated, his voice clipping the air with absolute finality. The name hit her like a physical blow. She immediately recognized it. Everyone in the country knew the name Thorne-the ruthless, untouchable billionaire tycoon who controlled global financial empires. She looked at his sharp jawline, his expensive tailored vest, and the sheer authority radiating from his posture. Her blue eyes flickered wildly, glancing toward the dark edges of the hotel gardens. Her survival instincts screamed at her to find a way out, to flee before this towering stranger could trap her in a brand-new cage. "Don't think of running, little one," Ethan spoke, his gray eyes narrowing as he read her frantic mind effortlessly. "The guards at the gate answer only to me. If you step out of this alley alone, you walk right back into whatever hell you are running from." Vivienne flinched, her knuckles turning white. "I am not running," she whispered, her voice cracking as a fresh wave of tears spilled over her long eyelashes. She looked down at her bruised ankle, her body trembling under the biting cold air. "I can't go home. I... I don't have a home anymore. They made sure of that." As she spoke those words, her slender shoulders began to shake violently, a silent, suffocating sob racking her small frame. She felt completely stripped of her dignity, discarded in the dirt of a luxury hotel backyard while high society celebrated just yards away. Ethan stood over her, his gaze fixated on her shaking form. His eyes wandered to her bare, exposed shoulder where the pastel pink gown was torn and ruined. He despised the sight of her weakness, yet an unfamiliar, roaring protective instinct flared deep behind his ribs. Without a single word, his hands moved. He smoothly slipped off his heavy, expensive black tuxedo jacket. Stepping closer, his massive shadow completely blocking out the wind, he draped the warm fabric over her trembling shoulders. The heavy material completely enveloped her in his scent of premium cologne, cedarwood, and rich cigar smoke. "Shh," Ethan murmured, a rare, low tone entering his voice that he had never used with anyone else in his corporate empire. "I promise I will give you everything in this world. You just have to be my wife." She clutched the lapels of his oversized jacket, feeling the sudden, overwhelming warmth bleeding into her frozen skin. It was the first time in twenty years that someone had offered her a shield instead of a blow. Still, she looked up into his cold, handsome face, her blue eyes searching his sharp features with heavy skepticism. "What if you leave me?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "If you throw me away later like trash when you get what you want, what am I supposed to do? I have no money. I have no power." Ethan's expression softened into something dark and solemn. He looked down at her, his voice absolute. "I have a solution. I will draft a contract. You can leave whenever you want, but I will never have the right to ask for a divorce. You will hold all the power in this transaction. I will not break my legal bonds. What say?"

Images of her biological father's house flashed before her eyes. She remembered the freezing mornings, the whistling crack of the leather belt, and the terrifying laughter of the accountant in Room 609. Her father had sold her like meat for twelve million dollars. She couldn't go back there. Outside these iron hotel gates, the world was full of vultures. The dark city streets would eat a penniless, runaway street baker alive. Having shelter and absolute protection was the only thing she needed to focus on to survive the night. As he said, she could leave whenever she wanted. Vivienne clutched his oversized tuxedo jacket tightly, her independent guard rising to mask her deep shyness. "I will marry you tonight, Mr. Thorne. But I have one condition: I get pocket money. Every month." Ethan froze, staring down at her. His gray eyes narrowed in complete disbelief. "Pocket money? Are you a kid?" Vivienne shook her head fiercely, her cheeks turning a bright shade of crimson. "No! I am not a kid. I am an adult. I am twenty years old! What if I want something to eat, or what if I need to buy clothes...?" Ethan let out a low, dry rasp through his nose. He pulled out his phone, his gravelly voice dropping back into corporate gravity as he dialed his assistant. "Marcus. Draft an exclusive marriage contract immediately. The bride holds the absolute right to dissolve the marriage at any time, while I waive all rights to file for a divorce. Have it ready at the altar in five minutes." He ended the call and shoved the phone back into his pocket. He turned his unblinking gaze to her face. "Okay. Give me your bank account details. I will have a monthly allowance authorized immediately." Vivienne nervously bit her lower lip, looking away. "I... I don't have a bank account." Ethan stopped dead. He asked her with a sharp look, "Then how do you expect to receive it?" Without waiting for a response, he reached into his vest pocket, pulled out his premium sleek black wallet, and emptied the slots. He took a massive, heavy stack of crisp paper bills and dropped the entire mountain of cash straight into her lap. Vivienne's deep blue eyes widened to the absolute size of saucers, staring down at the currency in utter bewilderment. She had never seen this much money in her entire life. This kind of crisp stack was something she had only ever seen hidden inside her father's hand after a massive gambling win-and even then, it was only two or three notes at most. She looked up at him, her hands trembling. Ethan checked his watch, the ticking hands showing they were dangerously close to midnight. He looked down at her. "What now? Put it away. I don't have time to negotiate, little one. Come with me." Vivienne looked down at her silk dress, her face burning hot with embarrassment. "I don't have a pocket," she said softly. Ethan's tight mouth twitched into a rare, microscopic softening. He leaned down slightly, his long index finger pointing directly toward the heavy black fabric wrapped around her narrow, shivering shoulders. "You are wearing my jacket, little bride," Ethan rumbled velvety softly, his deep voice carrying a low, private register near her face. "Put it there. The inner lining is fully equipped." Vivienne's breath caught at his overwhelming proximity. Moving quickly, her small fingers slid the thick stack of crisp bills straight into the deep, secure interior pocket of his tuxedo jacket, patting the fabric down until the money was safely hidden away. "Good," Ethan nodded, his voice returning to a firm command. He bent down slightly, extending his large, scarred hand out toward her, waiting for her to take it. The nameless girl hesitated for a fraction of a second, her heart hammering against her ribs, before slowly reaching out. Her freezing fingers slid into his palm. His hand was incredibly large, steady, and blazing with a warmth that felt like an absolute lifeline against her cold skin. Ethan nodded, his grip tightening securely. He took one step backward, intending to help her stand, but an immediate, sharp wince left her lips. She gasped in pain, her face turning entirely pale as she accidentally put weight on her severely sprained ankle. "I'm... I'm sorry," she whispered frantically, shrinking back slightly, expecting him to get angry at her weakness. "You don't have to say sorry for anything from now on," Ethan cut her off, his voice commanding and completely unyielding. Before she could even process his words, Ethan leaned down. In one swift, effortless motion, he slid his strong arms beneath her knees and her back, lifting her completely off the ground in a flawless princess carry. The nameless girl gasped softly, her instincts forcing her to slowly wrap her slender arms around his neck for balance. Ethan didn't stumble. He held her close against his broad chest, his cold, piercing gray orbs staring directly down into her soul, locking her in his gaze as he turned and strode powerfully up the stone steps toward the grand wedding hall.
