Chapter 1

The cat Nancy and I had raised was gone.

I searched for him all night in the pouring rain, dialing her number over and over. She never answered.

It wasn't until I checked Instagram the next morning that I realized where she was. She had flown overseas to watch a fireworks show with her first love.

She even posted a photo of them together.

The caption read: 【With you by my side, my world is full of sunshine.】

I didn't confront her. I just went straight to the airport and left.

I stopped looking for our cat. And this dead-end marriage, I didn't want it anymore either.

I sat on the curb, having stayed awake all night, mindlessly refreshing my social media feed.

I was hoping against hope to see any news about Peanut.

I had posted a missing pet notice, thinking that if anyone spotted Peanut, they might post about it online.

Peanut was the golden shaded cat Nancy and I had raised for five years. Yesterday morning, she took him to the vet for his shots, and I hadn't seen him since.

While searching for him last night, I kept calling Nancy, but she didn't pick up once. I had no idea where she had gone.

That was when her new post popped up on my screen.

It was a photo of her and Seth.

Their heads leaned close together, their smiles bright, while brilliant fireworks exploded across the night sky behind them.

The caption read: 【With you by my side, my world is full of sunshine.】

With a soft clatter, my phone slipped from my fingers and hit the pavement.

Lately, Nancy had always claimed she was swamped with work, rarely coming home.

Taking Peanut to the clinic yesterday was only because I truly couldn't clear my schedule and asked her for a favor.

I never imagined that her so-called busy schedule was spent keeping her first love, Seth, company.

Right then, my phone buzzed with an incoming call from Nancy.

Staring at the caller ID labeled “Wife,” I fell into a daze.

We had been married for five years.
