Chapter 1
The smell of burnt sugar and yeast usually filled our street, a happy smell from Miller’s Bakery, my parents’ life. Now, the air was cold, sterile, like the silence inside the house. Two weeks. Two weeks since they found Mom and Dad in the back of the shop. The police said robbery, but the cash register was full. Their work, their joy, all gone. The bakery doors were locked, a "Closed" sign gathering dust. My engagement ring felt heavy, a lie on my finger. Mark Carter, my fiancé, the man who swore forever, was gone too. He called once, his voice flat. "Sarah, I can't do this. It's too much." Too much? My parents were murdered, our bakery was dying, and *he* found it too much? A week later, I saw him. Downtown, at a fundraiser for his city council campaign. He was laughing, his arm around Veronica Hayes. Veronica, with her family's old money and sharp smile. The society pages loved her. I felt a cold wave wash over me, then a hot flush of anger. My grief was a raw, open wound, and he was dancing on it. Helpless. That’s what I was. Utterly helpless and alone.
Detective David Carter, Mark’s older brother, was different. He was assigned to my parents’ case. He’d stop by, ask gentle questions, bring coffee. He looked tired, lines etched around his kind eyes. He talked about justice, about finding who did this. I clung to his words like a drowning person to a raft. At the funeral, the church was packed, a sea of pitying faces. The scent of lilies was suffocating. Mark was there, in the back, with Veronica. He didn't meet my eyes. David sat beside me, a solid, comforting presence. After, when everyone had offered their clumsy condolences, David stayed. The bakery was silent, the display cases empty. Financial ruin stared me in the face. "Sarah," he said, his voice low. "I know this is sudden. Probably insane." He took my hand. His was warm, strong. "Marry me. Let me take care of you. I swear I’ll protect you, and I won’t rest until we find who killed your parents." I stared at him, shocked. Marriage? But the bakery, the debts, the crushing loneliness… His eyes were sincere, offering a lifeline. A desperate hope flickered. Maybe this was a way out of the darkness. "Yes," I whispered, the word barely audible. "Yes, David." He squeezed my hand, a small smile on his lips. The case, he promised, would be solved. It never was. It just went cold.
