Chapter 2
The silence stretched between them like a fragile thread, snapping under the weight of unspoken words. Tristan remained at the edge of the cliff, his eyes locked on Selene as she stood a few feet away, her posture tense but resolute. The winds howled through the trees, carrying the scent of rain, but neither of them moved, unwilling to break the delicate stillness that enveloped them.
It had been years since he had seen her. Years since her sudden departure left a hole in his heart that had never truly healed. His pack had come to rely on him more than ever, and he had buried his pain under the weight of responsibility. Still, not a day had gone by without the thought of her lingering in the back of his mind, a shadow that refused to fade.
"I didn't think you'd come back," Tristan said again, his voice hoarse with emotions he couldn't fully express.
Selene's gaze softened, a flicker of the old affection he remembered so well. She stepped forward, but not close enough to bridge the gap that lay between them, as though she feared what would happen if she crossed that line.
"I didn't think I would either," she whispered, her voice raw, laden with regret. "But I didn't have a choice. The rogues-"
"The rogues," Tristan interrupted, his brow furrowing in suspicion. "I get that they're a threat, but there's more going on here, isn't there? You didn't just return for the pack's safety."
Her eyes met his, and for a moment, the bond between them flared, raw and undeniable. The air between them shimmered with the echo of their past, and Tristan could feel the ache in his chest intensify.
"Tristan, I-" she began, but her voice faltered, as though the words she needed to say were caught in her throat.
His heart pounded in his chest, but he forced himself to remain calm. He had waited so long for this moment-too long to let it slip away. "What curse, Selene? What really happened?"
Her face twisted with pain, her eyes downcast as she exhaled slowly, like she was trying to find the right words. "I thought I was protecting you by leaving. I didn't want you to be dragged into this. But now... now it's too late. The rogues are just the beginning. The curse is stronger than I realized."
The last few words hung in the air, heavy and foreboding. Tristan's mind raced as he tried to process her admission. A curse. What kind of curse could make a woman like Selene abandon her mate without even a word of explanation?
He stepped closer, his gaze locked on hers, his voice insistent. "Tell me everything."
For a long moment, Selene remained silent, her gaze distant as she wrestled with herself. The storm clouds above them rolled in, the sky darkening with a sudden intensity that mirrored the storm brewing inside him.
"It's a family curse," she began, her words slow and deliberate. "My bloodline is tied to a power that no one can control. It's ancient, and it's unstable. My wolf is... unpredictable. Sometimes, I can't control her. And when I couldn't hold it in any longer, I left. I didn't want you to be caught in the crossfire. The bond between us-if I couldn't control it, it could have torn us both apart."
Tristan's mind spun. He had heard of curses that twisted the fates of those who were tied to them, but he had never thought one would affect Selene. His wolf howled in fury, the primal side of him refusing to accept the idea of her suffering, of the woman he loved being torn apart by some invisible force.
"Then why didn't you tell me?" His voice was tight, the words laced with betrayal. "I could have helped you, Selene. We could have figured it out together. But you left me in the dark. You left me to pick up the pieces of a shattered heart."
Selene's eyes glistened with tears that she fought to keep hidden. "I thought I was protecting you. But I see now that I was wrong. I never should have left you without an explanation. I never should have left you at all."
Tristan's jaw clenched, his fists tightening by his sides. The anger, the hurt, the fear-they all crashed down on him in a tidal wave. But beneath it all, there was a flicker of hope. The woman standing before him wasn't the same one who had abandoned him years ago. She had changed, and so had he.
"You didn't just abandon me, Selene," he said, his voice low but firm. "You left the pack. You left everything we had built together."
Her expression faltered, guilt flashing across her features. "I know. And I can't change that. But I'm here now, Tristan. I need your help. The curse is growing stronger, and the rogues... they're part of it. They're not just after me. They're after the pack."
Tristan's heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean? Are they being controlled by the curse?"
"I don't know yet," she admitted. "But there's something much darker at work. I thought I could keep the curse at bay, but the more I tried to suppress it, the more dangerous it became. The rogues are drawn to the energy it creates. And if they get their hands on it-if they get their hands on me-it could be disastrous."
Tristan stepped closer, his anger shifting to resolve. "Then we'll stop them. We'll stop this curse and protect the pack. You don't have to face this alone."
A tear slipped down her cheek, and she wiped it away quickly, as though ashamed to show such vulnerability. "I've been alone for so long, Tristan. I don't know if I can trust anyone again."
The words struck him like a blow to the chest. He had never wanted her to feel that way, to be so isolated. He had always believed in their bond, in the strength of their love. But she had carried this burden alone for too long.
"Then let me prove to you that you don't have to," Tristan said, his voice firm, filled with the weight of his promise. "You don't have to face this alone. You never did."
Selene's eyes searched his face, as if she were looking for any sign of doubt. But there was none. Tristan was resolute, his heart set on her, on their future.
She let out a shuddering breath and nodded slowly, as though allowing herself to believe in the possibility of redemption. "I don't know how to fix this, Tristan. But I'll try. I'll do whatever it takes."
A surge of hope filled Tristan's chest. Despite everything that had happened, despite the years of pain and loneliness, he still felt the pull of their bond. It was as though nothing had changed, as though they had never been apart.
"You don't have to fix it, Selene," he said, his voice softer now. "We'll do it together."
The storm clouds above them rumbled, and the first drops of rain began to fall, soft and steady at first, then quickly picking up speed. But in that moment, with Selene standing before him, the world seemed to still. Nothing else mattered. Not the curse. Not the rogues. Only the two of them.
The rain soaked them both, but neither of them moved. They stood there, locked in the bond they had once shared, ready to face whatever came next-together.
