Chapter 2

02

I walked away in a daze, stumbling into several people on my way out.

At the entrance of the retreat, I ran into another one of Jasper's friends.

He was holding a toy rattle and looked shocked to see me.

"Joanna? You're back from the retreat early?"

"Why are you standing here all alone?"

Looking at him, my mind flashed back through the last three years.

Three years ago, the city's elite organized a prestigious charity program. The women who completed it would return with high social status and awards.

I knew that as an orphan, my family background wasn't good enough for the Vance family. So, I begged Jasper's mother to get me a spot.

I came back early because I wanted to get a protection charm for Jasper. I never expected to walk into a nightmare.

I opened my mouth, but no words came out. I just stood there, stiff and lost.

The brutal reality finally hit me.

Jasper never loved me. He had lied to me for ten years.

The girl I treated like a sister had stabbed me in the back.

I couldn't understand why life was being so cruel, stripping away every bit of family, friendship, and love I had left.

Suddenly, Jasper's voice came from behind me. It was just as gentle as it used to be.

"Josie? Why are you back so early?"

I turned around. He was standing by the gate, his eyes searching mine with a hint of suspicion.

"The program ended sooner than expected," I replied.

I looked at this man who appeared as perfect as a prince. If I hadn't returned early, I'd still be his fool.

"Why didn't you write to me? I could have picked you up. It's a long trip; you must be exhausted."

Jasper looked at me with faked concern.

"Why didn't you go home first? Why come here?"

"I came to get a charm for your mother," I lied instinctively.

Part of me still wanted to hear the truth from his own mouth. I wanted him to explain.

"Let's go back together. The car is at the bottom of the hill," Jasper said softly.

He walked toward me. Noticing how intensely I was staring at him, a flicker of unease crossed his face.

"You've changed, Josie. Three years and you've become even more beautiful."

"I'm starting to worry I'm not good enough for you anymore."

I didn't react to his flirting. I was staring at the scented sachet hanging from his belt. It was embroidered with two lovebirds.

I recognized the stitching. Yara had made it.

My throat felt tight, and my heart felt hollow.

When we were kids, he told me I was his favorite person. He'd bring me treats and toys from all over the city.

He once swore to the heavens, "Josie, we grew up together. I promise you'll be my only wife. No one else, ever."

"I'll wait for you. My heart will never change."

But the bloody truth was right in front of me. He had been playing me since we were children.

"You don't have to worry," I said quietly, looking into his eyes.

"That's my girl. I'll take you home to rest, and we'll throw a welcome party once you've recovered," Jasper said, looking relieved.
