Chapter 2
2
Inside a luxury VIP suite.
Lila looked anxious. "Elias, do you think Seren is okay? She looked so angry... I just wanted to explain, but then my episode started..."
Her eyes were full of guilt and tears.
Elias wiped her face and pulled her gently into his chest. "She'll be fine. Seren Hayes has always been tough."
Lila still looked frightened. "But today was the day you were supposed to get your license. It's all my fault. Maybe I should call her."
"I don't want you two fighting because of me."
Just then, Elias's other assistant rushed into the room. "Mr. Thorne, the police called. The rose display you prepared for Miss Vance has blocked the main highway."
"An ambulance is stuck. There's a crash victim in critical condition. They need us to clear the road immediately."
"We're already working on it..."
Lila's eyes turned even redder. "You did all that for me? But I didn't even get to see it..."
Hearing Lila's disappointment, Elias made an instant decision. "Don't clear it yet."
"But sir..."
"But what?"
Elias scoffed. "Tell the hospital to send a helicopter to pick up the patient. I'll cover the costs."
The assistant looked troubled. "The back-and-forth might take too long. If something happens to the patient, it could hurt Thorne Group's reputation."
Elias chuckled. "Why are you worried? We have Seren Hayes, the best lawyer in the city. Besides, we're getting married. Thorne Group's assets are her assets. She'll handle the legal fallout."
"I'm staying here with Lila. Don't let anyone disturb us, including Seren."
"If you can't handle that, you can pack your bags with her."
The assistant wanted to say more but eventually left in silence.
I floated beside them, blinking my spectral eyes.
I felt something cold running down my face.
I didn't know if it was blood or a ghostly tear.
Elias had no idea that I was already dead.
I wouldn't be able to help him with his little legal mess this time.
But I suppose the Thorne Group's massive legal team would smooth everything over.
Including my death.
A wave of sadness washed over me.
For the next few days, Elias never left Lila's side. He even did his work from her hospital room.
If Lila asked for something, he did it instantly.
I watched as Elias bought her a private island and even named a star after her just because she said she wanted a home of her own.
"The universe is eternal," she had whispered. "I want something that lasts forever."
I smiled bitterly.
Elias was so wealthy now.
He was no longer the pathetic, struggling man I first met―the one everyone used to walk all over.
But during these past few days, something was off.
When the world went quiet at night and Lila was asleep, he would stare at his phone. He kept opening our chat log.
There was a hint of confusion in his eyes.
I knew what he was thinking. I had loved him to the point of madness. I never went this long without contacting him.
Even when we fought over Lila, I was usually the one to apologize within hours.
Now, several days had passed in silence. It made him uneasy.
He hesitated, then typed a message.
"Lila is stable now. I'll take you to get the marriage license soon."
"By the way, what was that surprise you mentioned?"
I finally saw our last conversation from days ago.
I had told him: "I have a surprise for you on the day we get our license."
Suddenly, my head throbbed with a piercing pain.
Something was missing. Something important that I had forgotten.
