Chapter 2

2

I was perfectly healthy. All my medical stats were great.

My doctors had said my chances of natural pregnancy were very high.

But my monster-in-law insisted on IVF so we could select for a boy.

Jeremy was obsessed with carrying on the family name, too.

I got tired of the nagging and finally agreed to the procedure.

I never expected it to be a trap.

I turned to the head nurse.

"I want to see every single file related to my case. Now!"

The nurse was already regretting her slip-up. She looked trapped.

"Ms. Sterling, patient records are protected by strict privacy laws."

"Besides, Mr. Miller already signed the Full Power of Attorney for Embryo Transfer on your behalf."

"I am Sylvia Sterling! I never authorized anyone. Is your hospital's protocol really this full of holes?"

My questioning left the nurse speechless.

Summer saw the stalemate and started sobbing.

"Sylvia, don't blame the nurse. It's all my fault. I won't help anymore."

She wiped her tears and looked at Jeremy with a heartbroken expression.

I looked at her with pure disgust.

"Fine. Then let's destroy those embryos right now!"

Summer cried even harder in front of the growing crowd.

She threw herself into Jeremy's arms, her voice cracking.

"Jeremy, maybe we should just forget it. Let's just get rid of the embryos."

She clutched her chest as if she were about to faint.

Jeremy pulled her closer and raised his voice to comfort her.

"Ignore her. Sylvia is just under too much pressure. She's getting emotional."

With those words, he easily dismissed my actions as a mental breakdown.

Summer leaned into his comfort and wailed.

"Jeremy, you're so kind to me. It's your baby either way. Why is she being so aggressive?"

Her words were a clear signal to everyone about their inappropriate bond.

My chest felt tight with fury. I swung my hand and slapped Summer across the face.

"Summer Thorne, stop acting so disgusting in front of me!"

"Sylvia! You're acting like a damn maniac!"

Jeremy was devastated to see his precious bestie hit.

He cupped Summer's face with extreme concern.

"Summer, are you okay? I'll get you some ice."

The tenderness in his eyes was something I hadn't seen in our three years of marriage.

Summer leaned into his arm, whimpering softly.

"Jeremy, I don't think Sylvia understands how much we care."

Jeremy turned to me, his face twisted in disappointment.

"Sylvia, is this what you want? I told you to stay home. Why did you come here to cause a scene?"

He had completely forgotten his ridiculous lie about the fast track.

I looked at the man in front of me and let out a cold laugh.

Jeremy never respected my work.

To him, my badge as a Senior Prosecutor meant nothing.

Whenever I tried to talk about my cases, he'd just brush me off.

"Yeah, yeah, you're good at talking. No need to brag about it," he'd say.

His contempt for me had become the very trap he set for himself.

I pointed at him and quietly pressed a button on my phone.

"Jeremy, I'll ask you one last time. Were you planning to use my body to carry your child with Summer?"
