Chapter 2 Black door

EMMA We walked in silence until the last of the club noise faded behind us. His hand remained at the small of my back the entire time, a steady presence that made me acutely aware of every step I took. My heels clicked against the dark floor. With each step, the nerves in my stomach tightened. He stopped at a plain black door with no number, entered a code into the keypad, and pushed it open. Then he stepped aside to let me enter first. The room was larger than I expected, its furniture arranged with deliberate precision. He shut the door behind us, and the lock clicked into place. The sound made my stomach flip. He crossed to a panel on the wall and dimmed the lights until the room was bathed in a warm amber glow. A moment later, music filled the silence, its slow, velvety bass blending with breathy notes that seemed to settle beneath my skin. I stood near the foot of the bed, my arms loosely crossed, watching him because looking anywhere else felt impossible. He faced me and began to undress without hurry. First, his tie, which he pulled free in one smooth motion and dropped onto a chair. Then came the buttons of his shirt, one after another, revealing the hard lines of his chest. He shrugged the shirt off and sat in the leather chair, his gaze fixed on me. “Strip.” The single word landed heavily between us. For a moment, I couldn’t move. Everything that had felt bold out on the dance floor suddenly seemed very real inside this quiet room. My fingers hovered near the zipper of my dress, but I couldn’t bring myself to pull it down. Doubt crept in. What the hell was I doing? Following a stranger into a private room on a Monday night because I couldn’t bear the thought of going home to face my mother’s impending marriage. A marriage I hadn’t asked for. A future I hadn’t chosen. He noticed my hesitation and stood. I braced myself for irritation, perhaps another sharp command. Instead, he approached slowly and stopped in front of me. “Look at me.” I lifted my eyes to his. “Are you okay?” he asked. “Do you want to stop?” The unexpected question caught me off guard. He waited, giving me time to answer. “Your safe word is red. You say it, and everything ends. No questions, no anger. You’re in control of that. Always. Do you understand?” Something inside my chest loosened. I hadn’t expected gentleness from a man who seemed so accustomed to giving orders. Yet he stood there, waiting for my answer instead of assuming he already knew it. I nodded. “I’m okay,” I said, finding my voice. “I want this.” He studied my face for another moment before stepping away. I drew a slow breath and reached for the zipper of my dress. This time, my hands didn’t tremble. The fabric slipped from my shoulders and pooled at my feet. Under the amber lights, I suddenly felt exposed in a way that had nothing to do with the dress I’d taken off. I was standing in a room with a man whose name I barely knew, about to do something I had never imagined doing that evening. Yet I didn’t leave. I crossed the room and stopped in front of him. He looked up at me, his expression unreadable, and reached for my hand. For a moment, neither of us spoke. Then he drew me closer, and the space between us disappeared. His kiss was unhurried at first, almost as though he were waiting for me to decide whether I wanted to meet him halfway. When I did, something changed. The careful distance between us gave way to a tension that had been building since the moment we’d left the club floor. I forgot the music. I forgot the time. For a little while, I even forgot the life waiting for me outside that door. He drew back just enough to look at me. “Still okay?” “Yes.” The answer came more easily this time. He took my hand and led me toward the bed. I followed. The amber light blurred at the edges of my vision as he leaned closer, his voice low enough that I had to pay attention to hear him. He reminded me that I could change my mind at any moment. I told him I understood. Then he reached for the silk blindfold resting beside the bed. “Do you trust me?” I hesitated. Trust was a generous word for what existed between two strangers. “No,” I admitted. To my surprise, the corner of his mouth lifted. “Honest. I like that.” He didn’t press me for a different answer. Instead, he waited until I gave a small nod before placing the blindfold over my eyes. Darkness settled around me. Without sight to distract me, I became aware of everything else: the music, the faint rustle of fabric, the warmth of his presence whenever he came close. “Colour?” he asked. “Green.” The night unfolded slowly after that, guided by quiet questions, whispered instructions, and moments in which I had to confront the unfamiliar vulnerability of letting someone else take the lead. There were times when I surprised myself. Times when I laughed softly at my own nervousness. Times when I forgot to be afraid of what came next. And somewhere between the music and the darkness, the worries I’d carried into the room began to fade. I wasn’t thinking about my mother’s wedding. I wasn’t imagining the conversations I would have to endure or the changes I would be expected to accept. For once, I wasn’t trying to work out how to survive a future I hadn’t chosen. I was simply living in the present. When he finally removed the blindfold, the amber light seemed almost too bright. I blinked several times, trying to adjust, and found him watching me. “You all right?” I nodded, feeling strangely reluctant to speak. He seemed to understand. He helped me settle against the pillows, then disappeared into the adjoining bathroom. When he returned, he carried a warm, damp cloth and a bottle of water. The simple gesture caught me off guard more than anything else that evening. He took care of the little things without making a performance of it. When he handed me the water, he reminded me to drink slowly. When I settled back against the pillows, he drew the sheet over me. I watched him through heavy eyelids. My thoughts were tangled, my emotions difficult to separate. I had entered the room looking for an escape, but I hadn’t expected to find this strange, temporary quiet. He leaned down and pressed a brief kiss against my cheek. “Sleep,” he murmured. “I’ll be back.” Then he left. The door closed behind him, and I lay staring into the warm darkness as the music continued to play softly and sleep finally caught up with me.
