Chapter 2

The hunger was a fire in my veins, a desperate, screaming need that overshadowed everything else. My body craved the blood in that bucket with an intensity that was all-consuming. Every instinct I had, honed over centuries of existence, told me to submit, to crawl, to do whatever it took to get that life-sustaining liquid.

But the look on Ethan' s face, the smug satisfaction, and Olivia' s quiet, venomous glee, sparked something else inside me. A tiny, defiant ember of rebellion.

I lifted my head, my eyes meeting Ethan' s.

"No," I said.

The word was quiet, barely a whisper, but it echoed in the silent basement like a gunshot.

Ethan' s smile vanished. Olivia' s eyebrows rose in surprise.

"What did you say?" Ethan asked, his voice dangerously low.

"I said no," I repeated, finding a sliver of strength. "I won' t."

For a second, there was only stunned silence. He had expected me to break. He had been counting on it. My refusal was not part of his script.

Then, his face contorted with rage. "You foolish creature. Do you think you have a choice?"

Before he could move, a new kind of pain seized me. It was not the ache of hunger, but something deeper, more elemental. A white-hot agony erupted from my very core, originating from the blood pact that still tied me to him. Refusing his offered sustenance, his 'gift', was a violation of our bond. The pact was now punishing me for it.

I cried out, my body arching against the chains as the invisible fire tore through me. It felt like my blood was boiling, my cells tearing themselves apart from the inside. A wave of dizziness washed over me, and the edges of my vision turned dark.

"What' s happening to her?" Olivia asked, a note of morbid curiosity in her voice.

Ethan stared at me, his anger mixed with a flicker of confusion. "The pact. It' s a backlash. She' s defying the bond."

"Serves her right," Olivia said with a dismissive shrug, stepping back as if I were something contagious.

The pain was relentless. I gasped for breath, my throat raw. Black veins started to appear on my skin, crawling up my arms like dark lightning. This was new. This had never happened before.

Ethan' s confusion hardened back into fury. He strode forward and grabbed a handful of my hair, yanking my head back.

"Stop this nonsense," he snarled, his face close to mine. "You will drink."

He was about to drag me toward the bucket when he froze, his eyes fixed on my arm. The black veins were spreading, pulsing with a faint, dark light.

"What is this?" he demanded. "What are you doing?"

I couldn't answer. The agony was too great. My consciousness was fading, the world dissolving into a haze of pain. The last thing I saw before I blacked out was the look of shock on his face.

When I came to, I was being dragged.

The rough concrete floor scraped against my back. My head lolled to the side, my vision blurry. Ethan had me by the ankles, pulling me out of the basement and up a flight of stairs. He was breathing heavily, his anger radiating from him in waves.

He dragged me through a long, opulent hallway and onto a large, open-air balcony. The night air was cool, but it did nothing to soothe the fire still simmering under my skin. Below, the city lights twinkled like a distant, uncaring galaxy.

He finally let go of my ankles, and I collapsed in a heap on the cold marble floor. I pushed myself up, my arms shaking, and saw that the sky to the east was beginning to lighten.

Dawn was coming.

Ethan stood over me, his chest heaving. His eyes were wild.

"You want to play games, Chloe?" he said, his voice trembling with rage. "You want to defy me? Fine. Let' s see how defiant you are when the sun comes up."

He knew what the sun did to our kind. It was the ultimate destroyer. A death of absolute, burning agony.

"You want to die so badly?" he taunted, kicking my side. I grunted in pain but didn' t cry out. "You think that' s your escape? I won' t let you. I' ll drag you back into the shadows at the last second. I' ll let you burn just enough to feel it, every single day, until you learn to obey."

His cruelty was boundless. He wasn' t just going to kill me. He was going to use the sun as another instrument of torture.

I looked at him, my vision slowly clearing. The internal agony from the pact had subsided into a dull, throbbing ache. The black veins were still visible on my skin, a stark and ugly pattern.

I pushed myself into a sitting position, my back against the balcony railing. I looked past him, to the horizon where a pale orange glow was spreading.

"Go ahead," I said. My voice was surprisingly steady. "Do it."

My calmness seemed to unnerve him more than any scream would have. He stared at me, searching my face for a hint of fear, for the desperation he was so used to seeing. He found none.

"You think I' m bluffing?" he growled.

He grabbed me by the arm and hauled me to my feet, pushing me against the railing until I was facing the rising sun directly. He held me there, his hands like iron clamps on my shoulders, forcing me to watch my own destruction.

"Watch it, Chloe," he whispered in my ear, his breath hot and angry. "This is your last chance. Obey me."

I didn't answer. I just watched the sky. The orange brightened, turning to gold. The first sliver of the sun peeked over the distant buildings.

I closed my eyes, ready for the fire.

The first ray of sunlight touched my face. I braced for the searing pain, the feeling of my skin igniting.

But it didn't come.

Instead, there was a strange fizzing sensation, like soda water on my skin. It wasn't painful, just… wrong.

I opened my eyes. Ethan was staring at my hand, his mouth slightly agape.

I looked down. Where the sunlight hit my skin, it wasn't burning. It was flaking away, turning into tiny, gray particles that dissolved into the air like dust. It wasn't the violent immolation he expected. It was a quiet, steady disintegration.

A piece of my thumb simply… ceased to exist.

"What…?" Ethan stammered, his grip on my shoulders loosening. "What is happening?"

He looked from my crumbling hand to my face, and for the first time since he got his humanity back, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

This wasn't part of his plan. This wasn't a death he could control.

This was something else entirely. And it terrified him.

That's everything available right now.
